Hmmm....all inclusives -Hotel Transfers NOT included???

How can carriers offer all inclusive packages WITHOUT Hotel transfers to & from the airport?? Do hotels in CR not offer free airport transportation to & from the airport?

I have not seen this in any other country except Costa Rica!

What does the carrier/travel agency/hotel offers to its customers in a specific package is up to them, Costa Rica as a country has nothing to do with it. And what is the name of the AI that has let you down? Was it difficult to arrange for the transportation by yourself?

Yeah, it has to do with your package and your hotel.

And no, it is not common to include transportation in a hotel package. Some do.... some don't. Not all hotels have the luxury of having a vehicle and driver "on call."

Transportation in Costa Rica can be expensive. Cars are expensive to buy and own and gas is more than $5 a gallon.

Not only that, there are several really good ways of getting from place to place including rental cars, shared van shuttles, private drivers, public bus and domestic flights.

If your hotel is in the northern Pacific area and you fly into SJO San Jose, you are 4-5 hours from your hotel. How do you want to get there? Many people prefer to choose their own transportation.

And by the way, I have been to many hotels in many countries - none of which offered transportation as part of a package.

What specific carriers are your referring to? Pretty much all suppliers in Canada have airport transfers included in their packages, such as Sunquest.

And no, most hotels do no offer free airport transfers. If you've never seen this, you haven't travelled extensively. Free airport transfers are a rarity. It's usually the package supplier that provides the transport, not the resort.

Hi fellow Canuck.

We've done the AI thing for years. Very convenient with young kids. Just back from Tamarindo which would appear to be the largest "resort town" on the Pacific side. As far as I could tell, there were only 2 AI resorts. It is not like Mexico where they are lined up side by side. Depends what you want I guess.

Plenty of private transportation companies around to pick you up etc. We chose to rent our own car for convenience.

Dont stay at a AI...use nice local, authentic lodges and Inns, far more intimate and enjoyable...AI is not a value in CR IMO, more for Mexico and Aruba...Papagayo is all resorts, built just for tourism/AI and in the middle of nothing...

Thats IMHO..

Every AI, that we have been on for DR, Cuba, Mexico, aruba & several other Islands had hotel transfers included. Even Ireland have them included.

We have even done cruises where the pick up from the airport to the ship was included.

CR is the 1st area we have been considering an AI that does NOT include hotel transfers, just seems odd. Its usually the hotel that supplies the transfer from the airport return.

We are nt interested in renting a vehicle, or doing a hotel on its own thats NOT AI. We have been advised the cost of food is high & to get an AI.

So obviously, IMO, it costs a whole lot more to travel to CR than many other places. 100-200$ to get to & from the airport, depending on where the resort is. Plus the airport food if needed.

Airport transfers to and from Pacific beach towns costs around $20 to $25 per person and you can eat very reasonably in local sodas and restaurants. Often travel agents will offer AIs because it's easy for them and they get great commissions!

sillyjilly: It seems like Costa Rica is really not a good fit for you. If you are determined to stick to All-Inclusives, your options are limited.

All-Inclusives are located in places like the Dominican Republic and Mexico for a reason. These countries do not have the same tourist infrastructure all over the country that Costa Rica has. Most people who go to AI's want to be "separated" from the country and only venture out on organized tours. In Costa Rica, it's a lot easier (and more fun!) to just strike out on your own and enjoy all the country has to offer.

Knowing whether Costa Rica is a place you want to go is one of the functions of this forum. I'm glad we could help you make up your mind.

As for the advice given you: "Food is expensive, therefore AI" - it's not really that logical. A small portion of the travelers to Costa Rica actually use AI's here and while the food is not cheap, there are inexpensive alternatives - small, local restaurants that have great food.

Just as a parting "gift," spend some time looking through this website: www.anywherecostarica.com It has a good general overview of Costa Rica, things to do, transportation options, destinations and some lodging recommendations and descriptions.

Wherever you decide to go, have a great time.

We booked Riu palace AI thru Apple and the transfers to and from the airport were included. It must be who you booked through that did not include it.

Sad that a regular as always is trashing our beaches and our country...the good is that now he knows that Papagayo is a Gulf and not a beach...

The transfer issue is kind of simple to understand...with the fluctuation of fuel prices and expensive operation cost...most tour companies do not like to include the transfers...since most of the time the prices changes...and of course tour operators like to make money...not to loose money...some will add the transfer cost ...but I can guarantee you that you are paying top dollars for it...

Mexico...Dominican Republic...Aruba ...Ireland ...Some Caribbean Islands they operate large number of passengers at each flight...most of the time 50 somenthing passengers in one bus coming from one destination...

Thanks God in Costa Rica most of the time we have to transfer families or just couples...the operation cost for those transfer is not cheap...but it is worth it...!!

Nice to be in places in middle of nowhere...

Really hard to understand the non sense of some people ...coming from a self proclamed want to be a travel writer....if the beach is with many people is a tourist trap...and if it is nice and isolated is a in middle of nowhere...???

My God!
