3 Days to spend near San Jose. Where to go?

I am planning a very last minute trip and will spend the later part of the week at Corcovado NP. Prior to flying to Puerto Jimenez, I want to spend 3 days in central Costa Rica area near SJO. Should I go to Arenal? I have a rental 4x4 so I am willing to drive anywhere around 3 hours. Maybe stopping by some little towns? I will be in San Jose this week!

Likes: Non-tourist areas but I know its hard to avoid. Love beaches, hiking, fishing, and photography.

I will have my fishing pole and would love to fish off the beach, hopefully meeting locals. Not sure if its worth finding any nice beaches near SJ. I only want to do light hikes as I will be doing most of my hiking in Corcovado.

*I need to relax and not be reminded of work.

La Fortuna/Arenal could be very interesting for you- a lot of nature, the volcano, the lake, hiking etc. If you don't want to drive so much, you could also go to Sarapiqui which is only around 1,5 hours from the capital. Even closer: the Orosi Valley with coffee plantations around, you could drive up from Cartago to Irazu Volcano or towards Turrialba Volcano- you can't really visit the Volcano but just to see it (its very active) is impressive. Around there in the mountains are small typical villages.

The closest beaches from San Jose are probably around Caldera and Puntarenas in the Pacific coast but you find a lot more beautiful beaches in other parts of the country.

You might want to look at El Silencio Lodge

or Peace Lodge....http://www.waterfallgardens.com/

Both are perfect for relaxing and forgetting about work and without the crowds.

Great options above and I'll throw out one more: The Los Angeles Cloud Forest in San Ramon-1.5 hours from the airport. Here's the hotel & nature reserve info: http://www.villablanca-costarica.com/

It's like getting the cloud forest experience without having to drive to Monteverde, less people, wildlife and amazing food & service! :-)

The good news is that no matter which of these areas you choose you can't go wrong. Enjoy!
