Plumbing Systems & Flushing of Toilet Paper?

I've been reading lots of reviews on TA while planning our first trip to Costa Rica. Just stumbled upon two comments recently in which people mentioned that the plumbing systems in CR can't accommodate the flushing of toilet paper and it needs to be disposed of separately. Wondering if this is typical everywhere (one was in a review for a 70 unit hotel in Manuel Antonio) or just in some places? Not a big deal, just good to know and set the right expectations.

It really depends.

In many hotels and restaurants, etc, you will see a trash receptacle near the toilet. This usually means that you should put your toilet paper in there. In some, however - especially newer ones - the septic systems have been built to accommodate toilet paper so no problem. Sometimes there is a sign in the bathroom telling you to please put your paper in the trash receptacle.

If there is no trash receptacle near the toilet, you can just dispose of your paper in the toilet.

It is a fact that some of the accommodations we were staying at required that used toilet paper is put in the waste bin. We found this awakward at the beginning but we adapted fast as the bins were taken care by regularly, and to our surprise, there were no smell noticed. Some of the plumbing systems used are of such a nature that paper can easily block the pipes, so it is better to have paper in the bin then water in the bathroom.

Thanks Hattie & xelas - good to know what we might encounter in that regard.

If it lists itself as a green lodge, the sewer system will not accomidate toilet paper. If it is built to western standards it is ok for toilet paper to be flushed. Restaraunts are pretty much the same. Most sodas and older, smaller restaraunts will have a container for your toilet paper, while the newer and "nicer" restaraunts, are built to the newer standards, and flushing of toilet paper is OK.

Welll, not necessarily the case, newjade. Some hotels that list themselves as "green" do have septic tanks capable of handling toilet paper. Some of the smaller, older ones don't have this capability, that's true.

Agree with Hattie...and just to try to clarify...some hotels or even private homes...have a septic tank than can be block with any little object...just follow instructions...

We stayed at a place in Manuel Antonio where you couldn't flush the paper. They actually had a note posted in the bathroom. Saw the same thing in the Sarapiqui area. If you stay at a place like that, do not close the bathroom door at night. My husband did that, and it did smell; other than that we never noticed. They're usually really good about emptying the cans.

Most places don't want you to flush the paper. Even places that use to allow us to flush paper have changed asking us to not flush over the past year. I have a sensitive nose, so.... It does smell but I make sure to throw the trash out before going to sleep. This is the norm thru out Central America.

My rule of thumb is if there is a can located by the toilet, use it for the TP. If not, then assume you can flush it. You'll find many hotels, restaurants, sodas, etc. will have the can.
