Volcano, Rain Forest and snorkeling in Costa Rica

Hello. We are 2 couples that plan on going to Costa Rica in February 2014.

We are starting to plan our trip but first, I would like to have a couple of ideas.

We would like to do snorkeling. What is the best area where we could rent a place (B&B or small place) and that is walkable to a beach with snorkeling.

We do not want to rent a car and move every 2-3 days. If there are excursions available to a rainforest and/or volcano in that area, we would be willing to stay for the whole 2 weeks. Perhaps change area, but only once.

Thank you very much for your advice.

If you are going for 2 weeks split your time between 2 spots. The volcanoes are all inland and, with the exception of daytrips to Rincon de la Vieja from Guanacaste beaches, none of them are reachable as daytrips from the beach. I am afraid we will need more info than snorkeling to steer you to your best beach options. FYI Costa Rica is not noted as a snorkeling destination. The best snorkeling is on the south Caribbean coast (Cahuita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo) which has lots of small B&Bs and inns and northern Guancaste beaches which are much more developed and farther from rainforest areas. For the south Caribbean check out www.puertoviejosatellite.com

Yeah, off-the-beach snorkeling isn't that good anywhere in Costa Rica that I would plan a trip around it. Mexico, Honduras, Belize, plus the entire Caribbean much better for that.

There are several volcanoes--including two in the central valley you can visit as day trips.

What else is important to you? I would suggest two destinations minimum. There are a lot of places worth seeing, so to recommend specific places we would probably need to know what the priorities are.

Your best option would be to fly into Liberia LIR. There are beach towns only 30 minutes from the airport - and quite a few more less than 2 hours from the airport.

From any of these northern Pacific beaches, you can do many day trips - including to the rainforest and volcano - and also arrange snorkeling trips.

I put this list of "Things to Do" together for someone else:

1. Do the One Day Adventure Pass at Guachipelin. www.guachipelin.com

2. Visit Rincon de la Vieja National Park for hiking, volcano, waterfalls, hot springs, mud pots, etc. - about 1 hour from either Playas del Coco or Playa Hermosa.

3. Go horseback riding, fishing or boating

4. Visit Santa Rosa National Park and see the old farmstead known as "La Casona" - now a museum - it figures prominently in Costa Rican history. There are several nearby trails to choose from and one longish trail ends at a deserted beach.

5. Take the boat trip through Palo Verde National Park. www.paloverdeboattours.com

6. Take the boat to Witch's Rock for surfing or just visiting a beautiful beach.

7. Visit the town of Guatil where you can see authentic Chorotega pottery being made.

8. Head to the Tenorio National Park for the hike through the rainforest to the Rio Celeste.

9. Go to Llanos del Cortes waterfall. Huge waterfall with small swimming area. There are often monkeys in the trees overhead.

10. Visit Las Pumas Wildlife Rescue Center in Canas where you can see all sorts of animals, including big cats.

11. Arrange a sailing trip with the Sea Bird or Marline del Rey out of Playas del Coco. Snorkeling or just a quiet sunset cruise.

12. Take a whitewater rafting trip on the Tenorio River or a float trip on the Corobici River. www.rinconcorobici.com

That website that crfan gave you - anywherecostarica.com - is great. Look in the Destinations/Beach for Playa Hermosa Guanacaste or Playas del Coco. These are the two that are the closest to the airport and closest for day trips.
