What Sights To See In San Jose During an Afternoon?

My wife and I will leave the Sarapiqui area on a Sunday with a private driver and arrive in San Jose around noon. We think we may need a private driver for about a 4 to 5 hour period to drive us around to various sights to see in San Jose. Once we leave the City we will be headed to a hotel near the airport. We need advice as to what to see. Based on an article in Lonely Planet, we have come up with the following possibilities:

Avenida Central

Mercado Central

Museo Nacional de Costa Rica

Parque Nacional

Parque Espana

Parque La Sabana

Cathedral Metropolitana

Museo de Oro Precolombino

Recognizing it will be a Sunday afternoon and we only have about 4 to 5 hours, what do you recommend and are there sights not mentioned that should be considered? Do we need the services of a private driver for this 4 to 5 hour period based on where the sights are located?

For most of the sights you would not need a driver as they are easily reachable on foot. But what about your suitcases?! Even with a backpack it would be hauling them around a difficult and hot & sweaty job. Since you will be staying near airport, drive directly to the hotel, check in, put all your stuff in the room (and in the safe) then do one of the nearby attractions, with a taxi. Or even return to San Jose if early enough, for a stroll on Avenida Central. As it will be a Sunday, check the opening hours. Mercado Central should be open 25/7 sunrise to sunset. Also Museo de Oro is open on most Sundays, till 5 pm. Museo Nacional is open Mon to Fri, so it will be closed on Sunday. You should skip the parks, not enough time (but you might have a nice down time in Alajuela Central Park if staying there).
