What to do in southern costa rica?

We are staying 10 days in Manzanillo. We want a pretty relaxing trip of beaches and some hiking but don't want to spend 5-6 hours in our car all that often.

We will do some of the local things like the sloth sanctuary and hopefully there is some good kayaking in this area too?

We do want to do one overnight getaway when we are down there and are thinking maybe Bocas del Toro or maybe going up to Arenal (sounds like a long drive though from Manzanillo).

Is there other must do and see things that are within a few hours drive down in the south Caribbean side? Maybe Tortuguero?

Thank you for your time and help

Tortuguero is most definitively a special place and worth visiting it. As You can take your car no further then to Moin (Limon) it is better to use a tour operator. And one overnight is not enourg; as it is 3 hours by boat from Moin to Tortuguero you cannot arrive before midday, so with one overnight you have basically one afternoon and one morning. Same goes for Bocas del Toro. For one only night away try Turrialba area, with rafting on Pacuare river, or only visiting historical site and enjoying in some cooler environment.

If you are here for nature, you will be able to do plenty of things around Manzanillo. Manzanillo itzelf has a nice beach, but Punta Uva will be safer (rip currents!). Take some time to visit Manzanillo NP, but also Cahuita NP. Driving times rather long, and a 1-night trip to Tortuguero (including boat tranfer) or Arenal will probably not worth it.

Hmmmm maybe we will extend it to two nights, just tough since we've paid for the full 10 days for the house we are staying in. Nothing wrong with just staying put either though :)

We will be down there a week from today!

I like the Tortuguero idea for nature or Turrialba if you're adventurous. It's around 5.5 hours to Arenal, which sounds like a deal breaker for you. Bocas del Toro also takes around 5 hours by the time you drive to the border, carry your luggage across the bridge to go through customs, drive another hour and take the boat. There is plenty to do in the Southern Caribbean area though. Kayaking and snorkeling are excellent in the right conditions. Cahuita National Park and Gandoca Manzanillo are loaded with wildlife. The beaches are among the best in CR and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.
