I have not taken the tour with Perillo but I have lived in Costa Rica a long time and traveled extensively in the country.

I went to the Perillo website and looked at the detailed information about the itinerary. It looks good to me and not too "touristy." Some great ideas - such as little Spanish tutorial and learning to make tamales. It seems very respectful of the culture. Good locations and great hotels.

My only objection - and this is something I object to for every guided tour - is that they are trying to see too many locations. A lot of time in a vehicle! But, all in all - it looks good and the price is right for a guided tour. It could be an excellent "introduction" to Costa Rica.

However, I have no idea how it actually works in real life! Let's hope someone who has actually taken the tour will respond.

I did find this: www.yelp.com/biz/perillo-tours-woodcliff-lake I looked through about 5 pages on Google and couldn't find ONE review! I understand your frustration.....

Perillo is a completely legitimate company, but their specialty is Europe and primarily, Italy (the Costa Rica program is relatively new, which is probably why you're not seeing tons of reviews on them). Their Italy stuff is great. However, if you're looking to go the escorted tour route, you might look at some other options with more of Costa Rica focus. Tauck's escorted trips, while on the pricey side are fantastic with amazing guides (I've done two different tours with them - not CR, going on my third in Dec, but my Galapagos guide was Tico and does the Bridges tours for CR for them - she was THE BEST) - check out their Culturious option which is a little smaller and more indepth culture wise. Abercrombie and Kent is also a great option for upmarket escorted programs. For something more budget friendly, check out Gate 1 or Caravan, both of whom have a long history of operation in the country. For more adventure, youth oriented, try G Adventures (used to be Gap). Just looking at the itinerary Perillo offers, I'm kind of surprised they left out Arenal completely and as much as I love Tango Mar, that's a LOT of transfer time for just 2 nights.

I've done a 9 day trip to Hawaii and it was fabulous!! 3 different islands all in 9 days! Very well planned and we had 40 people in our tour group. I'd do Perillo again. Actually going to book the 9 day Costa Rica tour.

I have done Italy and Hawaii with Perillo and have been very, very happy. Would like to hear some good reports about Perillo's tour to Costa Rica. I would only be interested if it were on the same scale as my prior two trips with Perillo. I cannot say enough good things about both trips, first class all the way!
