Itinerary/condos for 2 weeks in March/April 2014

Hello everyone! We're heading to CR in late March, early April 2014 for about 2 weeks. Flying into and out of Liberia with my wife and daughter (6yo). We'd like to stick to the pacific side of the contry and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for good "home bases" to stay. We'd prefer to rent a condo (1-2 bedroom, small kitchen, pool) and stick to 2-3 places over the 2 weeks. We'd base day trips out of those locations. Looking for a mix of beaches, jungle/animals and some adventure (zip, etc.). Any suggestions for a good itinerary over that amount of time would also be appreciated. Thank you!

I would hit Arenal for the activities and hot springs first. After that Tamarindo probably has the most in the way of condo rentals. Pretty lively town and plenty to do using it as a home base. You can try XploreCR to see activities in the area - http://xplorecostarica.com/

If you choose not to hit Arenal then Rincon de la Vieja is a great alternative for a volcano. More will chime in soon.

Playas del Coco or Playa Hermosa would also be good choices. Plenty of rentals in either one and either about 30 minutes from LIR airport.

Here's a list I put together for someone else of "things to do not far from Liberia:"

1. Do the One Day Adventure Pass at Guachipelin. www.guachipelin.com

2. Visit Rincon de la Vieja National Park for hiking, volcano, waterfalls, hot springs, mud pots, etc.

3. Go horseback riding, fishing or boating

4. Visit Santa Rosa National Park and see the old farmstead known as "La Casona" - now a museum - it figures prominently in Costa Rican history. There are several nearby trails to choose from and one longish trail ends at a deserted beach.

5. Take the boat trip through Palo Verde National Park. www.paloverdeboattours.com

6. Take the boat to Witch's Rock for surfing or just visiting a beautiful beach.

7. Visit the town of Guatil where you can see authentic Chorotega pottery being made.

8. Head to the Tenorio National Park for the hike to the Rio Celeste.

9. Go to Llanos del Cortes waterfall. Huge waterfall with small swimming area. There are often monkeys in the trees overhead.

10. Visit Las Pumas Wildlife Rescue Center in Canas where you can see all sorts of animals, including big cats.

11. Arrange a sailing trip with the Sea Bird out of Playas del Coco. Snorkeling or just a quiet sunset cruise.

12. Take a whitewater rafting trip on the Tenorio River or a float trip on the Corobici River. www.rinconcorobici.com

13. Take a whitewater rafting trip on the Cucaracho River riostropicales.com/index.php/…cucaracho-river

So really, you could plan on staying in Playas del Coco for your whole time and just do day trips around the area.

Of course, with two weeks, it wouldn't be difficult to choose two locations -- maybe Playas del Coco and the Arenal area.

These websites should help: anywherecostarica.com/destinations/playa-del…

Personally, I don't like the Tamarindo area. I think it is overdeveloped and way too expensive. A "small, laidback beach town" with more than 60 restaurants? Er......

What about going further south to Manuel Antonio or that area for part of stay? I guess I could even look at flying into/out of different airports if it made more sense. How long of a drive is it from the Playa Hermosa to Manuel Antonio area?

vrbo.com has some great options for weekly rental. condos, Some small villas with pools even. For our two weeks in Dec it was tough narrowing down just two areas. For diversity and since it is my Husband's first visit to Costa Rica we chose the Arenal Region for the volcano/lake//mountain experience and Dominical/Uvita area for the coastal portion. We liked that idea over the more crowded Tamarindo/Jaco/Manuel Antonio areas. Kind of personal preference. The drive from Nuevo Arenal to Uvita is about 5 hours. In Country flights are a lot quicker but we enjoy the ride and consider the road trips part of the vacation. Lots to see and you never know what you will come across. Great markets, rivers with crocodiles, horse parades and breathtaking scenery. Vamos included an ice chest with our 4x4 so we'll have cold water and can buy fresh cheeses, fish and produce along the way. Local Ferias are a lot of fun in CR My only requierement of the driving is that it is daylight hours only! Those suprises on the road aren't great in the dark!

Don't forget this is Easter time so don't wait too long to book your lodgings. It is a very busy time with both locals and tourists on holiday.

Actually Easter is in late April in 2014 so hopefully this is somewhat in-between the rush between spring breaks and Easter! That said, we will book in advance!
