Suggestions on how to get around in CR?

We will be arriving in San Jose, spending a night in Heredia, spending a couple of nights exploring Arenal and/or Monteverde and then checking into the Riu Palace (where transportation will no longer be an issue) for a few days and flying out of Liberia.

1) Are one way car rentals feasible (picking up in San Jose and dropping off somewhere near the Riu Palace)?

2) How long are the following drives:

- Heredia to Arenal

- Arenal to Monteverde

- Monteverde to Riu Palace

3) Would a standard car (e.g. Toyota Yaris) be OK, or is 4WD needed?

We would be traveling in April.

Thanks!

1. yes several companies will offer you one way rental, if not Riu then at least Liberia.

2. check this link with reliable driving directions and times: www.yourtravelmap.com

3. basically a standard car would be OK, although the road from Tilaran to Santa Elena (Monteverde) is notoriously bad rocky bumpy one, so higher ground clearance of an SUV or 4x4 type of vehicle is recommended.

Hello. Does anyone know if you can get the car rental, insurance from your home country before arriving?

I live in Victoria, BC, Canada.

We'll be arriving in early Jan. via the northern border with Nic. We have about 2 1/2 weeks in C.R. Our return flight is out of Liberia. How do I find the rates for domestic flights?

For domestic flights: Nature Air and Sansa They both have websites.

You may be able to get part of your car rental insurance through your credit card. But there is a mandatory, by law, liability insurance that you must pay in Costa Rica. Some agencies include this in their quote and some don't. Deal directly with a Costa Rican agency and not a third party (such as Orbitz) or through a Candadian or US website.

Thanks,

Any suggestions as to what rental agencies to go with or avoid. Is it cheaper to book ahead of time?

Yes, better to book ahead of time.

Try Wild Rider, Vamos, Adobe, Alamo, Solid and Service. Toyota, Budget and National also get good feedback.

Stay away from Economy or Thrifty.

Thanks for the reply.

What would you suggest for a car (2 adults)

How about a basic 4x4?

Naturally we're trying to keep the cost in line!!

Cheers

Most rental car companies have a broad range of 4x4's. Some of the most popular are the Suzuki Jimmy and the Daihatsu Bego - both small.
