Costa Rica weekend excursion choices?

Four women ages 17-65 looking for a 2-night excursion from San Jose. One person is not very fond of water activities. Looking for a place for all of us to go with a variety of things to do/see. Daughter who is there studying abroad suggests we choose one of the following: Puerto Viejo; Manuel Antonio; Tamarindo/Playa Conchal; La Fortuna/Arenal; Nicoya and Tortuga Island; or Playa Sámara. I'd appreciate any insight/feedback on these destinations. Thanks!

La Fortuna/Arenal definitely for a 2-nite break. It's a 3 hour drive from San Jose through the mountains and there's lots to see and do including ziplines, hanging bridges, a waterfall, volcano hikes, boat trips to Cano Negro to see wildlife and for evening fun - the hot springs. See www.arenal.net for an overview of most of the Arenal lodgings and map. See Desafio Adventures http://www.desafiocostarica.com/ for a great local tour operator around Arenal.

Puerto Viejo, Tmarindo, Playa Conchal, Nicoya peninsula and Samara are all too far IMO for such a short stay (4-5 hour driving time). Tortuga Island is a daytrip by boat (think large party boat) for snorkeling on an island in the middle of the Gulf of Nicoya - not much fun for someone that's not into water activities and only good for a daytrip.

You could also look at packaged tours to Tortueguro, however be aware that all travel around Tortuguero is by small boat through the canals as there are no roads there. You could also check out Sarapiqui if you;re interested in wildlife - just 1.5 hours from San Jose with rainforest reserves at La Selva and Tirimbina as well as chocolate tours.

I would suggest Manuel Antonio or Arenal. It depends on what you want to see and do. Manuel Antonio is a rainforest and beach location and Arenal is located in the mountains and known for its volcano. Both are very beautiful...just depends on your likes!

Thanks everyone, your tips have been helpful! Looking like we may go to Manuel Antonio! (Arenal was right up there, but my daughter has recently gone there, so this was the next choice)
