Best place to break the Puerto Jimenez – Puerto Viaje drive

According to Google maps, the Puerto Jimenez – Puerto Viaje drive is about 8 hours long.

Is this correct?

We’ll have a 4x4 rental.

Assuming we want to break the journey in two, can you recommend an interesting place to spend the afternoon and night?

Never ever trust Google Maps for driving times! Use this link instead www.yourtravelmap.com .

It will give you 12 hours, much more realistic time. And that is calculated without stops. So you should not assume to break the journey in two, you better do it. After about 6-7 hours driving from PJ I am quite sure that the only place the driver will be interested in will be a quick dinner and a comfy bed. However, you might be different. After 8 hours of non stop driving over Cerro de la Muerte on PanAm 1 you will reach Cartago. It is relativelly small and nice town, with plenty of restaurants and hotels, and its main attraction is the cathedral. If the road and the rain will wear you down earlier, you could stop at KM70 on PanAm 1, still in the mountains named Cerro de la Muerte; there is Quetzal's Paradise Lodge, very nice, great views, excellent hummingbirds sightings.

As Xelas points out, that's a long old drive over some of the toughest roads that the country has to offer. Be prepared for a few stops to stretch legs and recover from the curves. I would lean towards the earlier stopping point, simply to avoid being on the roads in the dark.
