I'm partial to the Caribe Sur, around Puerto Viejo, but places I love Arenal/La Fortuna, Samara/Nosara, Manuel Antonio, Osa. Tamarindo is popular, but not my favorite.

There are tons of places that can be considered the "best in Costa Rica".

In really on depends on YOUR interests.

Without knowing your interests, we can't point you in the right direction. So what can of things are you looking for?

Beaches?

Mountains?

Exploring?

Relaxing?

Animals?

Surfing?

Partying?

Fishing?

Nightlife?

Secluded areas?

Busy areas?

A mix of some of the above?

Also, how many days will you have to visit? That also helps...

I recommend that you spend some time looking around the destinations section of:

http://www.anywherecostarica.com/destinations

See which areas appeal to you, and come back and ask more specific questions about the areas that interest you.

I will say that two of the most popular destinations are Manuel Antonio and Arenal. Due to their popularity, they are more crowded areas. However, they are popular for a reason- they offer a lot.

Check out the site above and let us know what areas interest you.

The same answer to your same question. Take a look at the AnywhereCostaRica website for a good general overview of various areas.

Plus - May is a great time to be in Costa Rica. Just enough rain to cool things off and not a lot of tourists around.

As a rule of thumb: For a one-week visit, figure two areas.

Where you go will be somewhat determined by which airport you fly into: LIR Liberia or SJO San Jose - they are 4.5 hours apart.

Keep in mind that you may need to spend your first/last night somewhere near the airport if your flight arrives late/leaves early.
