Looking for itinerary and advice for 6 days in Costa Rica

Hi everyone!

Two friends and I (all mid-20s) just booked tickets to visit Costa Rica in early May (flying from New York into San Jose arriving at in Monday 10:00am) and staying till Saturday. I wanted to ask the forum for any advice on example itineraries and places to stay! I know it's the beginning of the rainy season in some areas, but we would like to have some sun.

We're looking for a relaxing trip (a beach would be nice?) and would probably restrain to two cities max since we're only there for 6 days and don't want to kill a lot of it traveling. From what I've read, San Jose doesn't sound that interesting to us, but what would you guys recommend? We're most likely not going to be able to rent a car as that would knock us out of our price range (we're looking for a cheaper vacation for this one)

Would also appreciate any good hostel recommendations too!

Thanks!

Don't worry about the weather. I think May is the best month to visit as there is not much rain but just enough to green things up after the dry season.

One option is to take a bus or taxi into San Jose on Monday and catch the public bus to Puerto Viejo on the south Caribbean coast. Spend Mon-Tues-Wed there and check out surfing, the Jaguar Rescue Center and maybe a guided hike into the Gandoca Manzanillo Reserve for wildlife and rainforest. For info on lodging, activities and transfers from San Jose check out www.puertoviejosatellite.com and http://geckotrail.com/transport.htm

On Thursday take a whitewater rafting trip on the Pacuare with pickup in Puerto Viejo and dropoff in Arenal at the end of a long day. exploradoresoutdoors.com/pacuare-rafting.html Spend Thurs. and Friday nights in Arenal. Check out ziplines or canyoning or waterfall hike and spend the evening at the hot springs. Saturday morning take a shuttle back to SJO for departure.

If your flight on Saturday leaves before midday, you need to spend Friday night in Alajuela where SJO is located. The above itinerary won't work and you may be better off just spending the first 4 nights in either Arenal or Puerto Viejo. Otherwise you'll lose too much time transferring between destinations on such a short trip.

Hello! As Crfan said May is a good season to visit Costa Rica, The place for me would be Uvita you can find there surf, good weather(all seasons of the year), Wales, turtles, all kinds of water sport, estuaries and mangroves, it is located among what's considered the most biologically diverse regions on the planet. Do some research you will love it. Hoping this can help you

Another good option Arenal Volcano and MAnuel Antono National park...do yourself a favro...book directly with travels services providers and stop the abuse of some big web sites...ask for break down...many middle people trying to make a lot of monry from your bookings...avoid hotrls tryring to sell you a tour or transfers...

Hi everyone!

Thanks so much for the help, we've decided on going to Arenal from the airport once we land followed by Manuel Antono!

Does anyone have any good recommendations for hostels (or any other cheap accommodation) in Arenal and Manuel Antono?

Thanks again!

For Arenal, look at Arenal Backpackers Resort. There are also a lot of small, "Mom and Pop" places that are inexpensive, including: Fortuna Rustic Cabins, Hotel Roca Negra. Hotel La Fortuna is also inexpensive. Check hostelworld.com or hostels.com also for lodging in La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio.
