Escorted Tour in January with Husband, 19yr old,22 yr old

I’ve been trying to find info on this board about an escorted travel company. But no luck so far.

I do not want my husband to do the driving no matter what anyone says about the roads. Great guy, but I don’t want to have to sit and be the navigator and get dirty looks from 3 people in a foreign country.

Yes I could hire a driver, but I do not understand if I have to rent the car and then the driver, or just the driver.

Then do I have to make the reservations at the hotels myself, the side tours??? And how do I get to the side tours???

Plus I’ve heard that travel in January during winter break is much more crowded.

Has anyone taken a tour with LaTour, Globus, Caravan, or Colette?

I know that I will not get to see everything that all you guys say is so wonderful because we will be going with too many people, but I will not have to make a zillion phone calls and write a hundred emails. And be my own travel agent per se.

I will do this if it means not being stuck on a bus filled with 46 people all over the age of 60. As I can again see the eyes of my two kids rolling.

I want a family vacation, but sometimes I think I should go with a different family.

Can I come with you next time????

You can hire a car and driver. There are plenty of reputable travel agencies that can make reservations for you, should you wish. Costa Rica Gateway caters mostly to nature tourists but you could check out their website for an idea of costs for a car and driver, and some lodges.

I would think that your 19 and 22 years olds might charge you with child abuse if you took them on one of those guided tours.....LOL.

Certainly would be my idea of 'living hell' in any case.

What are your family's interests? How long a trip to Costa Rica were you considering?

cheers

Jerry

Laughing to what Geographic wrote.

I'm new here and I don't know if I am replying correctly to Geopgraphic or to myself.

Sorry.

But thank you for writing.

Child abuse huh? More like the other way around for 22 years. Grin.

But I get what you mean. I will look up the site you wrote about.

I am hoping to keep our trip around 7 days, maybe 8 at the most.

I thought we'd arrive into San Jose

And my wish list so far is

Poas National Park

Zip Line

Hanging Bridges

Manuel Antonio

Canopy Tours? Or am I repeating myself here. La Paz Water fall Gardens/Volcano

Monteverde Cloud Forest/Preserve

That's all I got so far from reading the forums. I need to go out and buy a book at Barnes and Noble or something and get my act together before it's too late to book something.

The cost in the brochures are so confusing and when you add them up the price for 4 people seems astronomical.

But I really want to take a family vacation.

Schina, CR is a little country (52 000 km2) but we don't have USA highroads so some trips are better to measure in terms of time (not distance).

www.visitcostarica.com/ict/paginas/home.asp (CR official site)

http://www.costaricabureau.com/index.htm (use as a guide it doesn’t contain all the hotels and rent a cars)

About your places to visit:

a) San Jose: only use it to arrive.

b) Poas National Park: beautiful volcano you almost would be in the crater, less than 1.5 hours form the airport (Juan Santamaria)

c) La Paz Waterfall Gardens: haven't visited but people say are beautiful, located really close to Poas Volcano. If you are going to visit Volcano Poas take advantage and visit it.

http://www.waterfallgardens.com/

d) Monteverde: one of my favorite places, about 4 - 5 hours from San Jose. Rain Forest (the experts say is cloud forest) with one of the better canopy tours (they also have hanging bridges): Skytrek. You would find a environment similar to Volcano Poas, if you really want to have the experience of being REALLY CLOSE to a crater visit both places if not you could sacrifice Poas and stay more days in the other sites.

http://www.monteverdeinfo.com/index.html

http://www.skywalk.co.cr/eng/index.html

e) Manuel Antonio: believe me (Not proud of it) I never been there but almost everybody say is a beautiful place (just confirmed with my wife), think is a long trip from Monteverde but I'm going to research with some friends.

www.manuelantoniopark.com/mapk/default.asp

http://www.costaricabureau.com/index.htm

A suggested itinerary (recommend at least 10 days):

Day 1: arrive to airport Juan Santamaria, if arrive before 1p.m or if someone is driving for you, should go to Volcano Poas/Waterfall Gardens area.

Day 2: spend visiting Volcano Poas (half day) and La Paz Falls.

Day 3: trip To Monteverde (depart earlier)

Day 4 - 5: enjoy Monteverde

Day 6: trip to Manuel Antonio (depart earlier to enjoy afternoon at the beach)

Day 7 - 8: enjoy Manuel Antonio

Day 9: return to San Jose, and take your flight on day 10.

In case no option to extend to 10 days consider sacrifice Poas and La Paz Falls so it would be:

Day 1: arrive (if not driving by yourself could go the same day to Monteverde)

Day 2: depart to Monteverde.

Day 3-4: Monteverde

Day 5: depart to Manuel Antonio

Day 6-7: Manuel Antonio

Day 8: depart to San Jose, take a flight that departs late.

Sorry couldn’t recommend a driver or a tour company never need it, if you prefer not to drive don't do it, these would be your vacations so you may choose the option more comfortable for all of you.

Hope I help with your questions

Oh thank you MG.

That was so nice of you to plan out our visit. Laughing.

A lot of people have told me that I should not even think of having my husband do the driving. Especially since we do well in the car navigating together. So I will look up about drivers on the computer cites you recommended and look in a travel book for more.

I think I have basically decided to come to Costa Rica and will continue to read up about it on these forums.

Everyone seems to have a wonderful time there.

I really appreciate your input.

Take care

We had a wonderful time on the Caravan tour last Christmas with our 27 year old daughter and 20 year old son. We did do a zip-line day in La Fortuna instead of a planned activity. They loved the guide and all of the nature we saw. It also helped to lessen the "family blues" since they had many other adults to interact with besides their parents. I had never taken a tour before and probably will never feel the need to take one again but this was one of the best vacations we ever took and part of the reason was the tour itself. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
