taking wine in luggage

Want to take some wine from canada to CR for our hosts What is the deal with liquids on airlines in checked baggage. Duty arriving in CR on Alcohol, taxes? Can't find anything related in google. Also son wants to take cars and lego on flight. Any problems there?

There is no problem taking wine - or basically any kind of liquid in checked baggage from Canada. Just make sure you pack it carefully so it doesn't break and spill.

As for duty, you are allowed to bring $500 of stuff for personal use into CR. As long as you are only bring a few bottles of wine with you you should have no problems and shouldn't have to pay duty. If however, you are bringing in large quantities that make it look like you are trying to sell them, that would be another story.

cars and Leggo should be fine. Just avoid things like toy guns and things that look sort of sharp.

raquel is right, I wouldn't worry about the wine as long as it's in checked baggage and packaged in a manner so that it won't break. A friend of ours brought us two cases out of the states a few years ago and even that much wasn't a problem w/ customs. However, there are duty free liquor stores in the airport (SJO) if you prefer to purchase your wine here. Lisa in M. Antonio
