The drive from Arenal to MA?

How bad is this drive? Are the roads paved and in decent condition? Are there interesting things to see on the way? I will be traveling with three kids and may need to take a break somewhere along the way.

First for a much more thorough "Prolijo" style response see this thread which answered nearly this exact same question in considerable detail:

In brief, aside from a few single lane somewhat rickety bridges along the way, which will slow you down for a minute or ten depending on road traffic the other way and any reconstruction, the roads are all paved and in decent condition. Weather and traffic are the really big variables, not road conditions per se.

There are definitely several interesting stops along the way. During the first part depending on which way you go there is the Los Angeles Cloud Forest or the towns of Zarcero, Saarchi, Atenas. Along the latter half of the route there are several places that are frequently mentioned including the Rio Tarcoles Bridge crossing (where you can get out and look at the crocodiles, just be sure your car is locked up tight against the human variety), Carerra Biological Reserve (with its famous Scarlet Macaws), several zipline places and an Aerial Tram place and just off the road beautiful Playa Hermosa. And finally, there are also several nice places to stop and eat, but I'll let you read about those in the linked thread or any posts others would like to add here.
