Suggestions for One Day Trips from Guatemala City

Hi Guys!

My wife and I will be in Guatemala City (Clarion Suites} for seven days during Seman Santa, 2010. We would greatly appreciate some suggestions for 1 day trips from GC. .

At this moment Tikal is not on our agenda this trip, but we heard Mixco Viejo is nice. Any suggestions on getting there? Do we need an escort?

We're interested in the Antigua Tour with Elizabeth Bell. How do we contact her? We're willing to try ziplining, any suggestions?

Is ChiChicastenango "doable" in a day?

The Pacaya Volcano hike sounds interesting, but after reading the report about one hikers trip, it doesn't seem like fun!

We're native NYC'ers, speak Spanish and want to enjoy Guatemala with minimum problems.

Thank You for your Input!

Joe

Clark Tours has been there for years and presumably they still have a Sunday tour to Chichi. alfatravelguide.com/english/gt/bgtaDet.asp…

If you can stand crowds, you could take a shuttle to Antigua as a day trip. Somebody else will probably know which day the procession is, presumably Sunday, but that would be a great chance to gawk.

There are a lot of cool things to see in Guate itself, several worthwhile museums and a zoo, but you probably already knew that.

Here is Ms. Elizabeth Bell's website

http://www.antiguatours.net/

I took her walking tour in Dec 2008 and found it quite informative.

An afternoon in Chichi is quite sufficient.

Based on my personal experience and my friends', Pacaya volcano is fun if you're the active type. If not, it is quite a challenge. You can hire horses to take you up and down though, up to a certain point.

Hi there, contrary to what others that have only been to Antigua during holy week might tell you, the processions in guatemala city during holy week are quiet impressive too. Take a look at some photos from GC …victorarriaza.com/category/templo-de-san-jo…

In fact the procession from the San Jose Church on Palm Sunday is one of my favorite ones to watch in GC. And I second what Mayaphile says, in guatemala city you have several interesting museums to visit www.museosdeguatemala.org the botanical gardens within walking distance from your hotel in the zona viva. And the central market for souvenirs shopping, dowtown, behind the cathedral, which is perfectly safe to visit during daylight.

Apparently that museums site is down but here is a blog with some interesting pictures. So, that you can see what you can expect to see at some of those museums, specially the Ixchel museum. http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&rlz=1T4ACEW_enUS347US347&q=museos+de+guatemala&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=hRdCS8nZB5CwtgeHqIiICQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CCMQsAQwAw

I don't know about Mixco Viejo specifically, but nothing in Guatemala will match Tikal! Agree with Mayaphile about contacting Clark Tours.

I also have to agree, Clark Tours has been in business for many years.

This site can give you lots of information about the

country and guatemala city ,including the Kaminal Juyu archeological site and its well maintained museum. An area open the public and within the city limits where a cab can take you.
