June 28-July 7th travel to guatemala and belize

Hello,

My boyfriend and I want to travel to Guatemala and Belize from June 28th to July 7th, 2014. We would appreciate any suggestions on travel itineraries. We have not booked our flight yet. Would you recommend Guatemala then Belize or vice versa? What but travel btwn the two countries? Plane/bus/boat? We are 27th and looking for adventure and would like to see the ruins and history of the two places! Any suggestions would be so helpful!

Thank you!

I would purchase flights into and out of Belize City, head from the airport to Cayo District in the west via the Belize Zoo if you have time, spend 3-4 nights either in/near San Ignacio or in a jungly place, spend a night or 2 in Guatemala to visit Tikal and maybe Yaxhá, then head to either Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker for the rest of your nights. I've pasted a few of my favorite Belize links below that might interest you. Happy planning!

Thank you so much for the recommendations! How does one typically get from belize to guatemala? plane? boat? bus? And if the latter two...is it a long trip? Trying to budget money but not if it's at the expense of time! Also, it's must more expensive to book to belize vs guatemala, is there a reason you chose belize to fly in/out of? Again, thank you so much!

The belizebus link in my post above is a treasure trove of transport info. Your options to Tikal include tours, buses, private drivers, and flights; which is better depends on your itinerary (where you're leaving from and heading to next) as well as your budget.

Maybe you can tell from my 1st post I don't think you actually have time to do much in 2 countries, which is why I suggested Belize and then sneaking over to Guatemala for a visit to Tikal. If Guatemala is cheaper and beaches aren't a priority, go there instead - it's our favorite! More than enough to keep you busy with 10 days to explore.

In theory you could fly into Guatemala and out of Belize and try to see bits of both (Antigua and Lake Atitlán in the highlands, then a night or 2 for Tikal and head east into Belize for the rest of your trip). That would be more moving around than I'd suggest, though, so I'd save most of Guatemala for a future trip.

My top link in the 1st post has loads of photos and recommendations. You should consider guidebooks, too; I like Moon Handbooks for both countries or the Rough Guide for Guatemala or Fodor's for Belize. Even old versions from the library would give you historical context and suggested itineraries. Happy trails!
