Guatemala flights from Heathrow via Madrid

I'm thinking of booking another flight to Guatemala from Heathrow or Gatwick. Last time I visited there I went via the states which was a bit of a pain security wise and I had to check-in again when I go to the states.

Do I need to check-in again if I go via Madrid with Iberia for all flights or will be luggage be automatically transferred to the new plane when I change planes at Madrid?

I'd say that's a question your airline should be able to answer. Normally when you're flying domestic within the US, you're kept in a secure waiting area and you don't have to go through the whole drill again. But maybe international flights are handled different when connecting in a different country. So, I wouldn't take any chances trying to get an answer here because security procedures might be different. Good luck.
