I am traveling to GC and staying at the Hotel Barcelo. Can anyone tell me if its safe to walk around that area as a solo female .traveler ? Also are there any restaurants or shopping in that area or must I take a taxi to find these type of places

Thanks in advance for any information .

The Hotel Barcelo is in a relatively safe area, and there are many restaurants and shops nearby. However I would recommend taking a taxi the 2-3 blocks to the area with the most restaurants ,etc. To get to these areas you will need to cross the busy Reforma Blvd. and it is a bit intimidating. A good place to start your exploration is in front of the Intercontinential, Holiday Inn, Crown Plaza, or Westin.

If you are not bothered by crossing a very busy street, and do your exploring during the day you can certainly walk on your own. A lot of this is knowing your personal issues. Good Luck and safe travels.

I hadn't considered it, but Lee's right -- perhaps the most dangerous issue is crossing Reforma! But it is a short walk to the Zona Viva from the Barcelo, and it should be safe into the evening. If you're out late, you might consider a taxi back. Way back when, there was a pretty good steak place across from the Barcelo, but it's been a while and I don't know if it's still there or not.
