nice area?

Thinking of going to Guatemala city for a few days, maybe 4-5. We will be driving from San Pedro Sula, so we will have a car. Looking to be close to shopping, good restaurants, movie theater. Where would the best area for us to be? Any nice hotel recommendations? How far is it to Antigua? Is this a day trip? Thanks

We love staying in either Zone 10 or Zone 1. Both areas have all the things you're looking for. The latter is the old historic district, close to the central park, cathedral, mercado central, and other historic landmarks. Zone 10 is the very upscale district near the airport--lots of shopping, nice malls, great restaurants etc.

Antigua is less than an hour away--definitely a day trip, but you'd have more fun staying for a night.

I'll give you some specific recommendations if you want. Have fun!

Zone 10 has the most to offer in the variety of hotel chains and shopping. The movie theaters are first rate and inexpensive. The new Oakland Mall is as nice as any in the world. I have stayed in dozens of the hotels in Zone 10, and they are all good. Just look for one in your budget. Often the hotels offer discounts on their websites that are less than booking through an agent, so shop around.

Zone 1 is the historical district, and will be more authentic. There is less to offer in terms of shopping and movies.
