Are the 20$ shuttles to Antigua/Guatemala city safe?
They're safe, but can be very, very uncomfortable, with a lot of people crammed in.
Hedman Alas is about $40 to Antigua from Copan. If your budget allows it, the service is far more comfortable and bags are safely and securely stowed.
But if not, the shuttle will get you there. There are lots of places to book in Copan. ViaVia is popular.
Have a great trip.
i second the hedman alas bus recommendation. we've done the trip on the bus and it was lovely, the van not so much, it was uncomfortably full and the guy in front of me chain smoked the whole way. not a pleasant experience.
Divenuts, do they allow smoking on Hedman? I will be going from Antigua to Copan and was going to shuttle it but now I am thinking differently. I shuttled from Antigua to El Salvador last year and all seats were full but it was not bad and no one smoked. I could not handle a smoker in a van.
No smoking on Hedman buses. If you get a shuttle that isn't full, then everyone gets a full seat. If they're full - often the case because the agencies throw in together - they can be pretty miserable. Someone has to sit on those flimsy fold out seats by the slider after everyone else gets in and if you have big folks on both sides it can be uncomfortable and stuffy, no access to a window. Also, I've been on shuttles where they whipped around so fast it was nausea-inducing and a little scary. Case in point:
Hedman buses are almost like nice trains inside - big reclining seats, movies, snacks - a whole different experience. The main downside in addition to added expense is that it might take longer at the border if you have more people on the bus than on a shuttle to wait for. I don't know how likely that is; when I've taken HA buses between San Pedro Sula and Copán there's never been more than 6 or 8 people on the bus.
1st time in Honduras (2005), 1st photo I took was this 1 out of a HA bus window - still a favorite:
I am glad I found this thread as now I need to figure out shuttle or Hedman. We are going at lower season so perhaps the shuttle will not be full? But if they put people together from other other agencies I think it would be difficult to find out if full or not. Is the Hedman one of the buses that is with AC blasting inside? I am now leaning towards a comfy safe ride. I guess I was lucky going from Antigua to El Salvador last year on the shuttle as it was no problem and comfortable enough.
I'm guessing the Antigua > Copán shuttles would fill but you won't be able to find out in advance, really. I don't remember being overly cold on Hedman buses but maybe I just put on a fleece and didn't worry about it.
Anne - Have you decided where to stay in Copán? I'll be there in June with some friends and am having a tough time deciding.
Yep having a real tough time. I will e-mail you.
