Sand fleas and land activities?

Hi all,

I keep hearing warnings about the sand fleas in Roatan but what about Utila in April? Any concern?

Thanks in advance?

Also, what would you say are the best top-side (non-diving) activities on Utila? Diving in the am and ???? in the afternoon. Besides chillaxin and enjoying adult tasty beverages?? :-)

what you do after diving is really based on which part of the island you stay at.

utila is really a tale of two islands in one.

1/ utila town: on the eastern end of the island. lots of dive shops, bars, restaurants, inexpensive hotels, hostels and some rental homes etc. this is the only part of the island with roads but doesn't have much in the way of beaches as the town is built on and over the water. 90% of tourists stay here, other than adult beverages you can hike, go horse riding, visit float utila and socialize with other tourists and backpackers from around the world. my favorite hotels there are the lighthouse, mango inn and margarittaville.

2/ south/southwestern utila: imho the most beautiful inhabited part of utila, only one resort (utopia) and several beach front rental homes my favs are the coral house, the pineapple house and the cabana at big rock. no roads, miles of deserted beaches with coral reefs just a few feet from shore, peace and quiet, little cays you can kayak to(some inhabited some not) and just a handful of places to eat. after diving you can take walks on the beach, kayak, snorkel, lay in a hammock with a book, pick coconuts, go fishing, visit utila town(via boat), generally lounge around.

sand flies can be around anytime of the year but are generally only around just after sunrise and just before sunset on calm days with no breeze, use off or baby oil judiciously and you should be fine.
