auto travel

we have our trip planned to La Ceiba in august and plan to drive from the air port at Sula to La Ceiba in rental car. Any advice, experiences would be helpful. Is it safe?

The road from Sula to La Ceiba is very good. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from the airport to La Ceiba. Roads are well signed. Take a left out of the airport and drive to (and thru) El Progreso.

Tela was recommended as a lunch stop to us, but we skipped it due to the rain on the day we traveled thru.

The worst of the Honduran drivers we seen were on this stretch. Passing on curves, over hills, in the rain. I'm not a squeamish driver, but quite often we were behind a group of vehicles behind a semi, and someone would pass (or try to pass) all the vehicles in one shot (around said curves and hills). Just take your time, enjoy the scenery, if someone comes up behind you pull to the right a bit to allow them to pass, and don't be afraid to pass other vehicles.
