You will love Athens (I went to school there and am biased, but it really is a great town). Where are you staying? If you don't have a place yet, I recommend Hotel Indigo downtown.

For restaurants - try Last Resort Grill, La Dolce Vita, the Grit (vegetarian), Weaver D's, and Five Star Day. If you're in the mood for something fancy, go to Five and Ten. Best breakfast is at Mama's Boy. Best coffee house is Jittery Joe's.

There's fantastic shopping in downtown Athens and a good art museum on campus, if you have some downtime. Enjoy!

Staying @ Georgia Center due to 8 AM tour time - ugh! (or should I say uga?) Thanks for the info! My daughter likes the idea of a college town with a big University where it's fairly warm (ie SEC/ ACC) I am biased as well as a Penn State grad, and after hearing my stories for 17 years, ..... she just hates snow & cold.

Daughter went to law school there and those are all great suggestions. Some of the nicest college campuses imo are here in the south. Athens and UGA is a beautiful campus and so is Ole Miss in Oxford, MS.

PS. Are you flying into Atlanta or driving?

I would also recommend dining at The National, one of Hugh Acheson's (as seen on Top Chef) other restaurants, along with 5&10. It's my favorite in Athens.

Although not reknowned for their fabulous food, any new Dawg might want to eat at The Grill downtown, or The Varsity (which is basically just fast food, and greasy, but locally famous, and their pimento cheese burgers and peach fried pies are awesome!) for their historic appeal.

Strolling downtown and on campus will give you a real feel for Athens.

Great suggestions re: the Grill and Varsity. Personally, I'd pick the Grill, simply because of its location right downtown in the thick of student life, and because I think the Varsity in Atlanta is a better experience than its Athens outpost. Also, the Grill has to-die-for milkshakes. But either fits the bill if you want a good local spot for burgers, fries, etc.
