Evening Flight- Is it worth it to pay for extra day?

We're coming to the BI at the end of May and will be staying at the Marriott Waikoloa. Our flight leaves at 9:30pm. Does it make sense to try to check in somewhere else (albeit for 8 hours or so)versus trying to use the hotel changing room before we catch our flights? We're only going to be on the island for 6 nights and have so much we want to do. Just thought it would be difficult to live out of suitcases for the day.

You know, we were originally booked on an overnight flight home. On the day of our flight we decided to check and see how full the earlier in the day flights were and chose to try to go standby. We were successful on flights to both San Francisco and on to Portland. You might want to watch for an earlier flight and see how full the earlier one is and if it is relatively early, and you want to, it might be worth it instead of trying to find somewhere to stay, since I don't know of any.

Just a thought.

Have a great trip!

The hotels are not overbooked nowadays, I am sure you can get a 2PM late check-out. You have to be at the airport by 7:30PM and if you have a car to return make that 7PM. It takes about 30 minutes to drive there from the hotle, so the actual time we are talking about is just 4.5 hours.

The earlier flight idea works for west coast folks. It doesn't help someone flying beyond, especially the original poster from Connecticut. They could fly out in the afternoon, and find themselves somewhere on the west coast...waiting all night in the terminal for the first connecting flight out.

Definitely don't want to fly any earlier to to the next flight from LA to NYC.

I didn't realize for a 9:30 flight so much time had to be set aside for check in. I thought it was a pretty small airport. Why do you need two hours ahead of the flight? Is security really slow?

I'll definitely call the hotel in a few months and see if they can be accommodating- it sounds like the island is a little quieter these days due to the economy.

Thanks for the advice.

See if the Marriott in Waikoloa will give you a 1/2 day rate to check out at 6 p.m at the very least. By the time you get Dinner, car dropoff/checkin...that will be good.

We always take the accomodation until the next day(Flight at 11:30 p.m.)This way we can do as little or as much as we like..plus have the ability to shower and rest before the long trek home. To move to another facility does not make sense as they often will not let you check-in until 3:00 p.m. You waste the better part of the day(With Luggage in Car) moving.

To fly all the way to the East coast starting the day before and through the night without proper rest that day is just Brutal.

Ahhh it feels so good to take a hot shower before a 12 hour flight home.. most places will give you a later check out if you request it (@2PM) ask when you check in.. many will allow you an even later check out for half price the nightly rate.. well worth it once you are here... it is like having a whole extra day.

Yes we are a small airport and if you do your boarding pass prior to coming and you are not checking on luggage you can cut it short by getting to the car drop off by 8PM.. IF you are checking luggage and or if you are not printing your boarding pass then you need to add another 45 mins. on to that...

The Marriott will store your luggage after checkout and you may reserve a hospitality room [free] for an hour later in the day.

Check your airline for all of their departures on your date of departure. 90 minutes is normally sufficient, but we found out the hard way that the Kona airport has two United flights scheduled on Saturday nights, versus usually only one most other nights. So that's double the number of people going through security, checking bags, etc.

On Hawaii flights back to the mainland, you need to be screened twice: once by the department of Agriculture (checking for produce that may have native bugs) as well as the TSA screening. That means double the fun, and double the time in line.

Mike, there's another screening for carry-ons as you enter the waiting room.

Yes the AG screening for carry on's... easiest one of them all.
