How many nights? Is it just you? Do you plan in renting a car? What is your nightly budget? What kind if activities do you enjoy besides the ones you mentioned, because you can do those on any of them. Interested in historic things like Pearl Harbor? Give us more info and you will get better advice.

This is the forum for the island of Hawaii, so you might also want to check out the the general Hawaii forum which covers all islands: tripadvisor.ca/ShowForum-g28932-i36-Hawaii.h…

The "Top Questions" at the top right of that page has info that should be of help. But also have a look at the top questions on the forums for each island that you're considering.

If you mean "best time" with regards to weather - here's a good summary: hawaiiweathertoday.com/trip-planning-weather/

For some, the best time is when the whales are there - late Dec. through mid-April - but that's also one of the most expensive times to go ( the highest rates are during the Christmas season.)

For others, the best time to go is off-season because of lower accommodation and car rental rates - plus great weather and warm ocean temps (mid-April to mid-June & mid or late Aug to mid-Dec , with the exception of Thanksgiving).

Summer is the best time for many families who like to go when their children are out of school.

Pricing will depend on when you go and where you stay (i.e. area of the island and type/class of accommodation) and it really varies a lot.

Teresa -- This forum is for the Big Island of Hawaii. You would get more help by posting on the general "Hawaii" forum. State when you plan to visit.

Most of us here recommend putting together your trip on your own rather than buying a package. It's best to price out both, though.

Go to the Oahu forum (also Island of Hawaii forum also called Big Island, Maui forum and Kauai forum).

On the right side of the page on each forum, read the Top Questions.

On each of the forums, use the search: trip report

Read about 15 for each island. It will give you more of an idea of what others do on each island.

Order the free travel planners for Hawaii & each of the islands:

1-800-GOHAWAII

On the left side of the page on each island forum, click on Travel Guide.

When that page opens, under (not in) the section For foreign visitors, click on: see more traveler articles

There are articles written by TripAdvisor members.

Lava tour on the big island is a must. Kalapana Cultural Tours would be the best bet.
