Place of Refuge (Puuhonua O Honaunau)

We will be visiting the Big Island in early April. From what I am reading (The Big Island Revealed mostly - great book), this appears to be a place not to be missed. Would welcome comments from others who have been here, not only your impressions, but additionally how long should we need to see this historic site. Temporary plans are for a picnic while the sun sets (sounds like there is a picnic area), but will be arriving after a morning kayaking in Capt Cooks and am wondering if an entire afternoon until sunset is too long...........Mahalo!

It only took us about an hour to walk around the historical site, very interesting and well worth a visit. The picnic area is quite pretty and would be beautiful at sunset. Will you also be snorkeling or diving at the Captain Cook Monument? If you have an interest in snorkeling, reply to this post and we will give you our impressions--we've been there and at the Place of Refuge snorkel spot recently and can comment more fully if you need info. There's also a fun old hotel to eat at in the area, if you're interested...

the park closes at sunset.

There is an entrance fee of $5 per car for day use.

As there are a number of national parks on the island... I suggest you get a golden eagle pass for $50 and it is good for entrance for any Narional park of site for 1 year... in the mainland or islands ... I assume ou will see the volcano thats another fee. as are a lot more.

Snorkel is good with turtles by visitor center... its called "2 step beach" because in 2 steps your in 10' of water.

The picknick area is a 1/2 mile from the snorkel beach and the water there is not for safe swimming

allow a hour to see stuff.... and an hour to snorkel spend more time at Captain Cook as that is THE best in all hawaii.

Been there several times; peaceful & serene. Do we like it; enough to get married there one week short of a year ago!
