i am constantly adjusting my itenerary based on great info.

my wife, 8 yr old son and I will be on BI in July for about 8 nights.

am thinking fly into hilo and out of kona.

do i stay in hilo and use it as base for all of east side including volcano nat. park or stay in volcano and use it for base or a bit of both?

thinking roughly 4 nights and 4 nights on in kona area. (not so interested in being directly on ocean but would like to do snorkel tours and night manta snorkel..

can you help me balance my nights.

ps we will be a few nights in HNL so will get beach fix then.

thanks

Stay at least one night in Volcano so you can experience the park at night.

thx pzp,

since I feel i am short on time and hate packing up and unpacking, should i just stay my entire time allocated to the East side in volcano and do day trips from there? then head over to kona

I can't say that I would advocate all 8 nights on the East.

A 2/3 night East......5/6 night West is probably best for most. I would definitely want to be on the West side of the Island on the the day your flight departs KOA.

2 locales should serve you well....without having the feeling of packing up and moving every night.

The clear blue skies and dry weather of South Kohala is ideal.

thanks,

i should have been clearer.

when i said entire time, what i meant to say was entire time that i was planning on staying on the east side (and then moving on to the west side).

thanks tho

Maybe 3 east and 5 west.

2 places max.

You can stay Hilo or Volcano depending on what you find that appeals to you.

Hilo makes a better base for exploring the whole east side and you can drive back there at night. For a lot of time in the VNP, choose Volcano.

It's a 40 minute drive between the two but it is a 4000 foot elevation change and two lane highway, so it can get old running up and down.

Volcano has way less choice of places to eat and could be boring for an 8 year old. Hilo has more going on.

Try to find something other than a hotel in Hilo though, if you stay there.

PS. You really should try out our Kohala beaches in summer. Waikiki is. World difference, tons of people. At least take your son to Hapuna, Waialea, Kua Bay.
