Itinerary Help - 6 days - family with 2 teen boys

So excited to explore the Big Island, but need a little help/suggestions. Know we want to stay in Volcano 1-3 nights, exploring VNP and also want to do beach/snorkeling/ "typical Hawii" -Kona? and, like golf

we will rent a car.

looking to stay in good locations, not too pricey.

Coming from San Francisco -- fly to/from Kona??? What's driving like?

all suggestions for activties, restaurants, lodging welcome.

First off, make sure your 2 teenage kids will want 3 nights at VNP. Some people could spend a whole week at the park and love it and others are done with it after a few hours visit. Your the only one that knows your family and what they want from a vacation. My 3 older kids are always tired of the place after a day trip from the Kohala Coast, a 2 or 3 day trip would be a waste for us. Seeing that you and I are from the same area I would compare it to going to Pt. Reyes National Seashore in Marin. A day visit is fine for most people but others enjoy spending several days exploring the area. It's nothing like spending 2 or 3 days in Yosemite Valley.

As for the other part of the island to stay, I think most people would agree with finding a nice condo on the Kohala Coast someplace. Lots to do for a family vacation including great beaches.

In addition to Clint's advice, I suggest you read through all of the Top Questions on the right hand side of the forum. They will answer many of your questions.

Generally most people advocate 1-2 nights on the east side unless you have more than 9 nights total. You should allocate a minimum of 6-7 nights to the west side. With only 6 days total (is that 5 nights?) you'll be hard pressed to do many things on both sides of the island. That's a very awkward amount of time to try to visit both sides.

Yes, please read the Top Questions, which were put together to answer these general questions, including one on driving, two on lodgings, etc.. Then you will have a foundation for asking your remaining questions.

Clint, I appreciate your Point Reyes comparison. :) 3rd generation Marinite here (off and on for me).

My last memory of Pt. Reyes was wandering around dunes and grasses in cold damp fog with a fierce wind blowing, wondering why we had left sunny Fairfax to go over there. I often feel the same about Volcano.
