The Mauna Lani without a doubt ... sorry, a bit rushed for time, but the location of the Mauna Lani is far superior for what you are looking for.

It's no contest, the Mauna Lani.

We originally booked at the King Kamehamea but regretted it and went with Mauna Lani. Maybe different if we were not going to rent a car but there is seemingly no competition in the quality of the locations and hotels

This is one of the easiest questions I've ever had to answer on TA, lol.

Mauna Lani. The Courtyard is in downtown Kailua Kona at the pier. It barely has what I would consider a beach and there's too much reckless boat traffic at the pier to make ocean activities very safe or appealing (and that's kind of a shame because the snorkeling is pretty good). The restaurants and shopping are more of the low end tourist knick knack variety, and the town has quite a few homeless and druggies hanging about that make the vibe a bit uncomfortable.

The Mauna Lani is a very Hawaiiana resort in the sunny beach district of South Kohala with extensive ancient fishponds and native vegetation and the best snorkeling from a beach in the state. They are scheduled to renovate the pool so check with them about when that's scheduled. There are several restaurants both at the Mauna Lani and the adjacent Fairmont and the Shops at the Mauna Lani, Waikoloa Beach resort is ten minutes away with additional restaurants and shopping and the upcountry town of Waimea is 25 minutes away with many great restaurants and shops.
