Which Airport?

This will be our first time to the Big Island, thinking about spending 7 nights in Kona and 2 nights in Volcano area, Should I arrive at Kona airport and leave from Hilo? How long of a drive is it from Volcano area back to Kona airport? It is usually more expensive to split airports but I don't want to spend my last day on the road all day. Thanks for your help.

It would be best to fly into one airport & home from the other to avoid the drive back to KOA, and to maximize your time on the east side. The drive would be approx. 2 - 3 hours depending on where you stay on the east side and which route you return to KOA on - longer if there are any traffic problems.

Some car rental agencies charge a one way drop fee - suggest checking with Discount Hawaii Car Rental and Costco (we booked with Avis through DHCR and didn't have a drop fee from KOA-ITO.)

Are you talking about interisland flights - or flights from/to the Mainland? I'm thinking interisland flights - and they should be on Hawaiian Airlines. Hawaiian Airlines charges by the "leg" - so no need to return to your original airport for a round-trip fare. You may have a drop fee for the car, though.

Recommend into KOA and out of ITO.

Alamo Costco discount will waive drop fee in that direction......oddly enough not so in the other direction.

Yes, seeking clarification as to whether you plan another Island on this trip....as a ITO departure to the Mainland will be limiting if that is the case.

What time of year are you traveling?

You do NOT want to cross the Island on Departure day.....fatigue, aside.....there are too many potential roadblocks that could mess with your schedule....not to mention your vulnerable valuables in the car all day if the flight out is late in the day...

If your flights are indeed from the Mainland(both ways)..... and KOA proves to have best pricing and schedules.....you many want to consider a 9 night condo booking on the west side....with a night or two double booked in the middle somewhere. This can often work as a condo owner may offer a discounted rate for a 9night stay, and a cross Island drive on departure day is avoided.

Depending on your interests and time of year....a one night stay East may just be enough.

We just flew out of the Hilo airport (first time in all our 26 visits), and I can't say enough good things about that airport. All the staff had the real aloha spirit, even the lady in the car rental return area during a real downpour. Very nice airport building too. I wish we'd done this years ago. We flew Hawaiian Air and it cost no more to fly into Kona and out of Hilo, and the care rental with Costco/Alamo didn't charge a drop-off fee.

Ditto Bob&DI (and your original idea Karen); KOA is ok for arrival, but departures are much less hectic from ITO.

Discount Hawaii Car Rental has always been able to get us wheels without drop fee.

It's also a beautiful flight into and out of Hilo to/from the other islands, so if you're flying from another island and back to the mainland from the BI, that's another reason to fly into Hilo to start and out of KOA to the mainland.
