Planning first visit to hawaii, need suggestions

Hello,

My husband and I (late 30's couple, no children) will be going to the big island of Hawaii for the first time, hopefully at the end of March/early April 2014 (this year). It will be for 8 days. We enjoy relaxing on the beach, snorkelling, eating good food, we don't really care about nightlife, and we enjoy seeing different and interesting landscapes. We don't want to be too busy, but we would love some suggestions of what is a "must do." We decided we definitely want to go see the Volcano as well, but will probably stay on the Kona side. Where would be a good area to stay in Kona, close to snorkelling, restaurants, etc? We will be renting a car for our stay. We are also debating splitting our time between big island and maui, spending 4 days at each. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance!

If you want to see HVNP and the west side you don't have time to spend on Maui as well. You should plan to stay east for at least one night - two is better - and the rest on the west side.

How many total "nights" will you have? .....8 nights?....7 nights?

If 8, and in April..then 2 East will work .....if not..then just 1 night.

For west side accommodation I would look to South Kohala, for clear blue skies, little rain and some of the Island's best beaches.

Kailua-Kona is about an hour's drive from the beaches.

There are many condo complexes to select from within the Waikoloa Beach Resort or Mauna Lani Resort.

What is your nightly budget?

You need at least ten nights in Hawaii to enjoy staying on two islands. If you want to enjoy vog-free sun and beaches, you want the Kohala area. If you want to see the volcanoes, you want to stay in the town of Volcano or in Hilo at least one night. (Too far to drive to VNP from the opposite side of the island and have more than a couple of hours there before you head 'home'. Do not drive from side to side after dark on Big Island.) I can't think where you can stay for under $200 a night in Kohala area -- Hilo, yes.
