First night from Hilo to Volcano

We will be arriving in Hilo at around 3:30 p.m. the second week of June. I'd like to be able to pick up a couple day's worth of groceries and still make it to our place before dark. I figure by the time we get our luggage and rental car it will be around 4:30 or so. So a couple of questions:

How much time do we have to get to Volcano before dark?

Where would be a good place to pick up some groceries on the way?

Luggage will be on the carousel before you reach baggage claim or shortly after. Hilo is fast.

Have one person get rental car while other gets luggage. They can pick you up after they have the car.

On 11 south toward Volcano you will see a Walmart. On the other side of Walmart is a Target.

In June you should beat sunset.

I agree with KC. In June you will get it all done before sunset.

Check out the night glow at HVNP once it gets dark.

Support a local business. KTA store will be on your right a mile or so from airport on hwy 11.

The problem with that KTA is it stinks. I can't even go in there. It smells like old fish, and it is dirty.

Whatever market you shop at, you will support local employment. Everybody who works at Safeway (or Target) is a local and needs the job.

I usually shop at the new (relatively) Safeway in Hilo. It's very well laid out, very clean, and has a great selection. You must have a Safeway Club card membership (simple and free) or the prices will kill you without the sale discount.

I use the Target next door for packaged and canned food, and the milk is more affordable, also for any sundries like sunscreen or toiletries.

You do not want to go to Walmart, because it is a zoo and will suck your energy.

Sunset is around 7:00pm, and it's just about 30-40 minutes to Volcano, so you'll have plenty of time to get groceries and get there before dark. Hilo is *usually* a fast airport to get in and out of.

I like the Foodland in Keaau, I know KK disagrees, but that's where we usually stop if we're getting groceries between Hilo and Volcano.

Too funny, jet, I had to Google the MPD acronym - Maui Police Department, Mobile Pornography Device, Man Period Day, Memory Protection Devices, Mini Port Driver . . .

But I"m guessing you're referring to the Multiple Personality Disorder displayed by the ginger troll . . . although several of the others might apply as well :-)
