Big Island live music/venues/groups/performers

Really really appreciate any feedback you might have; Have scoured the forums a bit, but looking for some guidance in advance of our visit at the end of the month. We are Hawaiian music aficionados and like to make the best of our opportunities. Mahalo in advance!

Do you have favorite venues for live music on the BI? Are there local performers/groups that are just outstanding and you can freely recommend? Really would love to collect a few names we can try to track down or keep an eye out for.

Mahalo!

Hawaiian music covers a lot of territory ranging from Tiny Bubbles to slack key to falsetto and beyond. On the east side I know of no regular venue that I would recommend to you. Most of the best performances are one-time events in halls like the Palace Theater and the Akebono Theater. I know less about the west side but believe that the same holds true there. You can find restaurants and bars that offer regular performances, but you may have trouble hearing the music in those places.

I suggest that you check the calendar in the Saturday newspaper or online. The "alternative" weekly newspaper just closed up shop. That would have been a good source of information.

Lava Lava Beach Club is located right on the beach in Anaeho’omalu Bay and has nightly entertainment.... Henry Kapono, One of my absolute favorites, plays there one Friday per month... this month he's there on the 15th.

Here's their August calendar: lavalavabeachclub.com/about/…

Hey, thank you all very very much. I'd hoped to hear some more input, but guess most of the experts don't have much to add. We hope to catch the slack key at the Kona Sheraton and otherwise be fortunate to stumble onto some good stuff

Most of the "experts" are on island and have been dealing with the hurricane.

Konaweb is a great resource for local music as the owners are musicians. They have a calendar here:

http://www.konaweb.com/musicians/events.shtml

Some of the best local musicians and hula artists perform nightly at the Beach Tree at the Four Seasons. Napua at the Mauna Lani also has great local musicians starting around 5:30pm. The Mauna Lani Atrium also features many well known local musicians and hula.

John Keawe, Henry Kapono and Sonny Lim are names to look for. Keawe plays slack key guitar almost every Tuesday at the Waikoloa Beach Resort's Kings Shops from 7pm-8:30pm. Here is his calendar:

http://johnkeawe.com/calendar.html

Henry plays every third Thursday of the month at Don's Tiki Bar at the Royal Kona Resort, here is his calendar.

Other venues that have good live music - but not necessarily "Hawaiian" - include the Blue Dragon, Red Water Cafe, Big Island Brewhaus and Kona Brewing Company - all mostly limited to weekends except the Blue Dragon. Mostly the Blue Dragon plays rock but John Keawe does play there some time and other artists from different styles.
