Best Pediatric Emergency Care - Which Island?

We may be heading to Hawaii in Jan/Feb and want to choose and Island and hotel that is close to a pediatric emergency care hospital. We have needed emergency care for a child with a serious skin infection in the past and want to stay close to care in case it is needed. We figure all the islands have lovely places to relax and part of being able to relax is not worrying how to find medical care if it is needed.

Thanks!!

Then I would stay in Oahu, not Kauai.

You'd be limited to Oahu if you are that concerned.

My husband and I haven't had a problem getting good medical care on Maui. A Canadian visitor's mainland doctor judged her emergency surgical care on Maui to be excellent. She'd fallen at a pool and shattered her elbow -- a difficult repair.

Wilcox Hospital on Kaua‘i is excellent. Hubby was treated in the ER, much better all around than our home hospital. Part of Hawai‘i Pacific Health.

The Marriott is within 10 minutes drive.

Answers you get from strangers on a forum like this may not be the best source of medical advice. I'd suggest calling hospitals at locations you're interested to see if they can care for the child's specific condition.

I've had experience with the hospital's on Maui, Kauai and Oahu. Hands down, Oahu is where you want to be. Not only do you have a choice of hospitals, which you don't have on the other islands, you will get some of the best care in the country. Kapiolani Women's and Children's hospital is close to Waikiki.

Yep, living on Kauai I had great care from the VA Clinic, what they could not handle, I was able to use outside doctors , and even Wilcox Hospital all VA approved and paid for.

But, when something more serious came along, one was a MOSE operation on my face for skin cancer, with a private dermo surgeon on Oahu, and the other was an emergency flight from KAUAI to OAHU to Tripler Army Hospital for a Triple bypass that save my life. Thank you VA.

The point is, for serious procedures, we would have to fly to Oahu. That is real. Otherwise, I was well taken care of on Kauai, both at the VA Clinic, outside doctors, and Wilcox Hospital. All taken care of by the VA.

What they did not take care of was my airfare on hawaiian airlines, but considering what the cost of those two procedures would have been, if not VA qualified, not a big deal. But that was life with health care in the islands.

I like the idea of contacting dermotoligists on Oahu.....I cannot remember the name of the dermo surgeon that I went to on Oahu, but he was former Naval Air Pilot, in VP ( patrol squadron ) and totally professional, friendly and did a great job. I was also in a VP Squadron ( Vietnam era ), so we had lots in common.

The OP, may have to find a specialist in the pediatric field.......from our prior experience, we would suggest Oahu.

If you need more care than Kauai offers (which Wilcox has an excellent ER), they will send you to Oahu anyway. So then the answer is Oahu.

Is this an ongoing serious skin issue? Or the typical skin infections from cuts on rocks, coral, etc? If it's not an unusual and more serious situation I think you're fine on Kauai, Maui, and even the Big island. In fact, we had experiences with all 3 of our kids on all 3 of these islands where they needed to go to either an emergency room or urgent care facility and it was just fine.

In one case son #1, The Wild One, had to have coral removed from his foot ( with an infection). The Wild One's second episode was to have a fishing hook removed from his foot. Son #2 developed a general infection from a lava rock cut. Let me not forget son #2's severe hip contusion from boogie boarding.

Wilcox is a great hospital with a wonderful emergency room. We visited Wilcox twice and had excellent care. While it may appear to be a good drive from Poipu or the north shore, keep in mind that it's still a quick drive compared to the traffic on Oahu or Maui.

The lava rock cut and infection happened on the Big Island and the urgent care facility in Kona gave excellent care. Again, it might appear to be a longer distance but the driving is fast there.

Now, unless your child has some particular and more serious kind of skin issue that requires specialized care I'm going to go against the grain here and say you'll be just fine on Kauai, Maui and the Big Island too. Keep in mind that thousands upon thousands of families visit these islands year round. If they were known for being backwards in medical care they wouldn't be popular with families.
