First off, I have used tripadvisor forums many times in the past for trip planning and it has never let me down. A great site!
In about one week, my wife and I and parents will be going to Kauai for a 7 night stay. This is the first time to Hawaii for any of us. We are staying at Pahio Bali Hai Villas in Princeville on the north shore.
My family enjoys the sun and surf and some physical activity along with relaxing and lounging as well. We have all listed some things we would like to do based on friends, family and internet comments.
We don't want a completely stuffed iteneray, but want to make sure we get the most out of our trip as well.
Here is what we have so far.
Snorkeling. We want do experience this early in the trip and if it goes well (we haven't snorkeled much before) then plan for more later on. Best place on the north shore?
Powered catamaran. We were told that a powered catamaran would offer better views and experience, but haven't looked into this much yet.
Visit Kilauea Lighthouse.
Hike 1st 2-3 miles of Kalaua Trail. I've read many times here that this is a great experience.
Visit Waimea Canyon. I guess we just drive over there and look around? I was told to watch for fog in the morning. Any advice?
Horseback riding. A few people have recommended this. Planning on Silver Falls Ranch on the north shore. Comments?
Kayaking. I listed this last, but it is something we all definitely want to do. We are looking for the 'open' kayaks and probably stream kayaking over the ocean. Recommendations?
We have centered most of our activities to the north shore, but would go elsewhere if there is a "must see" event.
Besides our above activities (which may be too much) we want some time on the beach and the experience of a lua. I haven't spent much time looking at beaches so any comments on those would be appreciated.
I think I have the restaraunts covered based on comments on this site as well as The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook.
Sorry for the length. Comments on any of the above would be appreciated.
