Kauai activity or restaurant discounts?

I'll be honeymooning in Kauai for a week at the beginning of October, and was looking for advice on how to find some discounted activities in Kauai. We'd like to do some snorkeling, maybe kayaking, nature tours, and attend a luau, among other things. From looking around, it seems like the luaus and the kayaking are rather expensive, so I was wondering where we should look for discounts. Are there free tourist-type magazines which have coupons for restaurants & activies, or is Kauai too small to have that?

I saw some mention on here before about coupons for Fern Grotto, but I couldn't find the exact details of how you get that. I know we'll splurge on some things, but it would be nice to find some deals for other things to balance it out. We're staying in Kapaa, but plan to travel all over the island. Any tips? Thanks.

Many of the best things to do on Kauai are free, so don't feel like you have to spend $$ to have fun. Snorkeling, beaching it, hiking and playing in the waterfalls are free. Buy Kauai Revealed and you won't need to pay a professional to show you around -- just rent a car, which is also cheap. That being said, I highly recommend that you pay to see the Na Pali coast, either by catamaran from the north shore or by helicopter. It's absolutely spectacular.

As for discounts, the thing you'll see everywhere are activity booths trying to convince you to go see timeshares. Unless you enjoy this as an "activity," I'd avoid them. However, they do offer 50% discounts for some of the big ticket items on the island.

Having been to Kauai 8 times, we've decided the luaus are usually overpriced and overcrowded. We've never done the Fern Grotto or the river kayak trip. They're pretty expensive and we've heard they're marginal activities. Instead, I'd suggest you splurge to have cocktails and/or dinner at some of the oceanfront restaurants (like Tidepools, the Beach House, Bali Hai, the Sheraton's new restaurant).

Since it's your honeymoon, you can have a great time just looking for an out-of-the way beach to enjoy with your beloved!

A good place for coupons is Hilo Hatties. There's one in Lihue and once you get there they have a pretty good deal on a number of discounts at the register. And then there's also the timeshare presentation method to get discounts if want to spend part of your vac doing that. It depends on what you can stand.

For the discounts/coupons at Hilo Hatties, can you just go in and grab them, or do you have to buy something? Or do you have to buy tickets for the activity through Hilo Hatties?

I think you get the Hilo Hattie's coupons at the checkout when you buy something...just get choco-mac nuts or something to snack on and buy your real souvenirs at the Kauai Craft Fair...

It depends on your preferred level of activity as to what you will most enjoy doing - my husband and I hike, bike and whitewater kayak, so we try to go active things on vacation - not be herded around in a tour group. We really enjoyed the kayaking the Wailua by ourselves (though you can go on a tour if you want). It was $72 to rent the kayak (which also includes the cost of the permit) from Kayak Kauai in Kapa'a. Fern Grotto is really nothing to get excited about, IMO, it was the Secret Falls hike that was really fun. My husband still talks about that trip a year later, so it was definitely worth the $$$.

We were not planning to go to a luau at all, but when we attended the timeshare presentation at the Embassy, we got a 2-for-1 coupon for the Hyatt's Drums of Paradise luau, which made it only $65 for both. It was a pretty good show/meal for $65 - I probably would have been disappointed in the quality if we had paid full price.

One thing I will warn you is that a lot of the companies who advertise widely and distribute coupons all over the place is that they are more interested in quantity, rather than quality. yes, you can get a screaming deal from Air Kauai, but most people on this forum would tell you to do Inter-Island's heli tour or don't bother. I highly recommend McBryde Tropical Botanic Garden, and I believe you can get a coupon from Hilo Hattie's for them.

Do a Google search for Kauai discounts and you will get a ton of websites, some great, some pretty worthless.

When we checked into our condo we were handed a chunk of coupons and free small guidebooks.

Thanks for the suggestions; keep them coming! Neither of us has kayaked before, so I think we'd probably want to do a group kayaking tour rather than go it alone. Can anyone suggest the best places for beginners to do some kind of group kayaking outing? I saw one company that had all day outings, but I think we'd want something shorter than that.

I did buy Kauai Revealed and another book (recommended here) about more of the outdoorsy stuff to do there (I forget the title), but I haven't been able to read through a lot of them yet.

If you have a chance to get to the West Shore and you have a rental car, I strongly recommend a drive to Waimea Canyon and the Lookouts farther up the Canyon . The sights are spetacular. Even my 2 college age kids and high schooler enjoyed it and it's free .

That sounds nice. Can you do that in your average rental car, or do you need 4-wheel drive?

You can do Waimea Canyon in your average rental car - no need for 4-wheel drive.

There are a lot of magazines with coupons all over the place, from the airport to Wal-Mart. As mentioned, many of the better activities don't offer discounts, so the coupons may not help much. You can get some good discounts if you attend a timeshare presentation, but some people would rather lose a limb than go to one of those!

You can save on Smith's Luau if you don't do the dinner. The show portion is only $15. With the dinner, it's $60.00

I forgot to mention in my first post, I'll also be celebrating my birthday while on Kauai. Is there anywhere there where they give you special treatment on birthdays (or will that be entirely my husband's responsibility?!)
