Walking path on East side of Kauai...

We are staying at the Kauai Beach Villa's in the G building in early 2010...can anyone tell us if the Walking path along the east side of Kauai goes near the KBV complex? I know there is a lovely beach for walking on but have friends that will need a more level walking path.....

Thanks!

You can download maps here:

I believe the path starts closer to Lydgate. I am pretty sure it doesn't go all the way to KBV or Hilton because there's a golf course in between. The beach behind is ok but not good for swimming. You would need to drive up to Lydgate or further up into Kapaa and walk all the way to Kealia Beach. Renting bikes is another option.

Your friends can catch the walking path at Lydgate Park area -- it's just a short drive to catch the multi-use path from the KBV. That path is limited to just the Lydgate Park area.

A drive up to highway to Kapaa town will take you to the longer finished section of the coastal path. There are several places to catch the path between Lihi Park to Donkey Beach. There is a nice large parking area between Kapaa town and Kealia Beach, so you could walk in either direction.

You can easily walk the beach from the Hilton/Aqua area up to Lydgate--about a mile. That's a beautiful spot. you can then walk the loop within Lydgate. I think it's 2 miles in a loop.

The gap in the path from the river north to where the path starts again is unsafe for walking at the moment in some areas. The bridge has heavy construction under way to add a fourth lane and a walking path lane as well. Won't be finished for quite a few months. If you could safely walk across the river, you could stay on the sand for quite some way and then head out to the surface streets to keep going north. Some spots are iffy -- no sidewalks etc, but people walk along there. Eventually you could hit the rest of the Path that is finished and go up to Kealia and beyond. Where the pavement ends, you can take a rough, muddy trail all the way to Anahola Bay. It's a little shady (not in a good way) back in there. Some encampments, people stripping cars etc. We feel safe in daytime though.

have fun.

Here is a link to the Kauai Path organization's Web site, with lots of information about the path, including maps, and a twenty minute video (under "news") along phase 2 of the project, opened 6/26/09.
