Mother Daughter Excursion- First Trip to Kauai

Hello Everyone :) Happy New Year!

So, I have been to Kauai only once, when I was 11 years old, and to this day can recall the breeze on my skin, sand below my feet and watching the waves crash onto shore...

I just booked a trip in the last week of March to take my 11 year old daughter... Kicker is, she has no clue! I plan on telling her once we get to the airport or somehow getting her on the plane (ipod in ears and blindfolded, lol) and let her figure it out as we fly on over..

(can you tell i'm excited) We'll be there for 6 days... I've been reading and planning.. There is much to do! I could use some help... Somethings I'm thinking about are:

1- Definitly Zipline

2- Hiking (which trail or trails)

3- Boat tour- from the forum seems Captian Sundown or Andy to be the best

4- Helicopter tours- but my dilemma is would htis take up too much time? And what is the best time of day to go

5- Tons of swimming in Beaches galore

6- She and I are photography nuts... Should we bring along a video camera or stick to the basics and not get to bogged down?

Which underwater camera is worth buying- or stick to the disposable ones?

7- How is the photography tour, i read a thread about it, has anyone gone on it as yet?

8- Is the Luau (i think it sadi 70 something bucks) worth checking out

9- Is it worth doing both Boat trip to na'Pali coast and helicopter, or do one or the other?

I'd love some other input..!! Or anything at all... Thank you very very much...

You are a mother after my own heart. I just surprised my daughter with a trip to Las Vegas for her 21st. I am big on surprises (but hate them for myself :-)

I think zipline has a weight restriction so check the website of the one you want to go on. You didn't say where you are staying but my kids love Princeville Ranch and #2 son is going next week. He can't wait.

Capt Andy's is a fun boat tour. I recommend it.

Would your daughter be OK with a helicopter ride? My daughter was 12 the first time she went up and it freaked her out. Maybe look into Wings Over Kauai instead.

I bring one of the new flip cameras and it takes stills and video. I LOVE it.

Luaus are lots of fun and kids are $50 or something around that. I think your daughter would enjoy it. Most 11 year olds do.

My daughter at 11 loved taking a surfing lesson. Again not sure where you are staying but we can offer surf lesson advice. Of course shopping is always on my daughters mind. She liked buying a new bathing suit in Hanalei.

I doubt you will be able to keep it a secret until you fly over. The flight attendants will give it away and so will the sign at the airport where it says KAUAI bound flight. Besides all those aloha shirts and men in brown socks and sandals is a dead give away.

I told my daughter the night before by handing her a box of chocolate in the shape of chips to the casino. You might present her with a lei the night before or something fun like that.

Let us know how it goes.

There are a number of existing threads which will help answer most of your questions. As far as activities, I do think that the helicopter trip is worthwhile and very memorable. Captain Andy does a good job. I'm not much for luaus, but I think an eleven year old would enjoy it a lot -- Smith's is about the best one on the island. Do save some time to be spontaneous and just enjoy.

Aww- Thank you soo much for your sweet and informative reply. I'm sure one of these days your children will surprise you the same!

For zipline i was checking out Outfitters Kauai, as they do not have the age 12 minimum requirement. My daughter is pretty tall, a little over 5 feet and weight wise about 90 pounds, so shouldn't be an issue.

As for the helicopter ride, you are right. I'm a little worried about her freaking out too :) She is one of those 11 going on 30 type of kids. When we were talking about cliff diving in Greece her response was "Mother why would you put your child in harms way".. haha

I'll look into the Flips for her. She would love that. I wasn't too keen on bringing along the Sony handheld.

Shopping- of course. You are a mother after my own heart with that one!

I may have to tell her at the airport.. I was thinking right before we switch planes in LA from SD I'd put a Lei around her neck ;) and hopefully not get arested by security if she starts screaming and jumping around.

I'll definitly let you know how it goes! Thank you sooooooooo much for your input

Smiths has a Luau show only price of $15.00 per adult and even less for children. In my opinion the show is definatly worth the money but not for what they charge to eat.

I managed to pull off a surprise trip to Kauai with my kids a few summers ago - the ruse was we were going school shopping in our largest city . . . and once we got there, I just kept driving to the airport! I didn't say anything until we pulled up and I said "Get out - we are going to Kauai!" It wasn't their first trip, but they had NO idea. I even had the snorkel gear in the back of the car and they didn't notice. It was one of the best surprises ever!

Yes - do Smith's luau - my girls loved it. As well, there are some local free hula shows at a few different places (near shopping areas), so view those if you can. Mine enjoyed those as well.

Shave ice - stop every where. It was like a game to try shave ice all over the island.

I think I'd skip a flight at this time - maybe a boat tour if she doesn't get seasick.

In spite of all there is to do on Kauai, mine preferred hanging at the beach. It was very simple enjoyment - but they don't want to leave, so be prepared for sadness when you have to go back to the airport. :) I can't wait to hear this trip report! :)

Do you two like riding? There are stables on the north shore at Kalihiwai Ridge and Princeville, and on the south shore is CJM, which goes to the beach. It's a pleasant way to see the island at an "island pace."

Oh..!! You all have given me great ideas and suggestions..

Riding-- i had not thought of that.. she would LOVE it...

Zip lines- mosdef..! i can hear her already "seriously, is this harness safe mother?"

Shave Ice- definitely will stop at EVERY location possible.. Its vacation, so its all about gluttony and chillaxin...

Beach and swimming is at the top of the list.. She has never been snorkeling, so I'm excited to give that a go with her too.. I am thinking to hit up a walmart and buy a cheap boogie board. One of the other forums said it might be cheaper then renting-- any ideas? Snorkling gear i saw some all inclusive kits the other day at Target for like 10 bucks.

I think the hardest part is actually working and waiting till March! I am constantly planning and thinking... hahahaha.. in February a bunch of us are taking our kids skiing for the first time too, so next few months should fly by till we hit Our Island Getaway... which yes, I'm already sad about coming back to reality and we have yet to land there! (cross my fingers)

Your daughter sounds SOOOO much like mine at that age. A friend couldn't use her Madonna tickets. She gave them to me and I asked my 12 yr old daughter to go. She said " Mom, seeing Madonna isn't appropriate for a girl my age".

It sounds like that whatever you two will do, you will have a blast.

Be careful about buying cheap snorkel gear. If it doesn't fit, she won't enjoy it. If you rent a condo they may have boogie boards so wait and see where you plan on staying. Walmart is a good place for all supplies.
