Ocean Swimming in October - Where?

Hey all! I've really enjoyed all the amazing insight on this forum. I have one specific request - we will be on Kauai in October and a big goal is ocean swimming. We love to put in a mile or so in the mornings and are looking forward to the warmer waters! But knowing that October is transitional...what recommendations do you have on where we should station ourselves? Since we will be there longer than a week, we are thinking of N one week, S the second. Thoughts?

Splitting your stay is a great idea.

For the North Shore (of course check the daily conditions) try Hanalei Bay and Anini Beach. For the South Shore Poipu Beach.

Have fun. I'll be there in October too. Look for my DH swimming at Hanalei Bay.

We'll also be there in October. We always stay for at least 2 weeks and split our stay between North & South. It's hard to say just what the weather & ocean will be like, but chances are somewhere you'll find some calm, warm water. Hanalei Bay, Kalihiwai, Anahola, Lydgate and Salt Pond are great for swimming (conditions permitting).

October can bring some pretty strong currents, but agree that Hanalei Bay, and Aninii might be your best bets for a safe mile swim.

However, as mentioned, check and be well aware of the conditions any time that you are venturing into our waters.

Oh, itis stlll a bit early.......3 am.......You could also get a nice long swim in at Kalapaki Beach, which is where the Lihue Marriot is located. Only about 20 minutes or so from Poipu and the south shore.

We see longer distance swimmers here quite often, and is fairly well protected, as well as being quite a nice beach, with coco palms, sand, grass, and resturants, and tiki bar.

Anini Beach is usually the only place we consistently do ocean swimming (rather than just playing around in shallow water.) It has an outer reef that protects from waves and sometimes is flat like a lake. However, conditions there can be misleading. Stay away from breaks in the reef, which at times can have strong currents drawing one out to sea. Several people have drowned that way.

Where there are lifeguards that say it's safe to do it.

We often see long distance swimmers go back and forth between the Sheraton and Koa Kea or Waiohai in Poipu. In fact, this is where my daughter and granddaughter practiced for the Hanalei Open Water Swim.

Just because there's a lifeguard tower doesn't mean it's safe.
