top five resturants

I have been reading all I can, and decided to ask people to list their top 5 eateries. Price not important, just good food and atmosphere.

You'll get a huge variety of answers but here are our favorites (I asked my husband as well) :

1) Mediterranean Gourmet in Haena (lunch or dinner)

2) Plantation Gardens in Poipu

3) Roy's in Poipu

4) Cafe Portofino in Lihue

5) Keoki's in Poipu (lunch or dinner)

Lunch ONLY would be

1) Toi's Thai Kitchen in Eleele

2) Kauai Pasta in Lihue

3) Brennecke's in Poipu

4) Casablanca in Poipu

5) Kalaheo Cafe (breaskfast is excellent, too) in Kalaheo

Maybe not exactly what you want, but my top 5

Hukilau Lanai - great food & atmosphere, outside with a peek of ocean

da Imu Hut - no atmosphere, view or a/c but terrific local food, esp teriyaki or kalua pig - better to get to-go plates, watch the sunset at Salt Pond.

Ono Family Restaurant - eclectic atmosphere, no a/c - BEST breakfast on island

Mark's Place - no atmosphere, to go only, but possibly the BEST all around local food on island

Anahola Farmers Market BBQ weekends - BBQ wild boar or huli huli chicken

3chis,

I don't get Mark's Place. I have not been there but I begged my husband and his friend from PA to try it last March. Well, they had nothing good to say about it. Maybe, they ordered the wrong stuff???? I think they were looking for a basic, lunch spot and ordered a sandwich and a burger. Anyway, I still have not heard the end of that recommendation! :)

marti - give Mark's Place another try, but for something more local style or the daily special. His Chicken Katsu and Loco Moco are really good. Hubby got a Popcorn Chicken plate smothered in country gravy (daily special) he really liked. Come to think of it, it's the Katsu, sauce or gravy that make his plates soooo good, not very healthy, but yummy! He also does a daily special slice of pie (lilikoi cheesecake)! Here's the menu:

Problem is..... hubby won't eat anything unhealthy! Seriously! I might try it when he's at work and I have the car and the kids to myself. But something smothered in gravy.... not happening! LOL!!

In no order:

Tidepools (Hyatt Poipu, Dondero's has better foodie food, but Tidepools has the setting)

Merriman's (Poipu)

Hukilau Lanai (Kapa'a)

Mediterranean Gourmet (Ha'ena)

Roy's (Poipu)

We love going to Duke's and Keoki's for happy hour or lunch, but not so much for dinner.

Planatation Gardens, the Beach House, Red Salt all in the Popiu area have good settings, but a combination of food + value + setting, they aren't my top 5.

Mark's Place, Hamura Saimin, Tip Top, Joe's on the Green are places we try not to miss for lunch or breakfast and Joe's especially for happy hour.
