final Waimea Canyon-Napali Coast lookout (on a clear day)

Is there anyway to know WHEN is a good time to catch a blue, sunny sky at the last lookout up the Canyon?

we caught it once a few yrs back just by happenstance, but on a 2nd trip it was clouded over.

You have better odds the earlier in the AM you go. But the odds are still no where near 100%.

Right now, with no trades, you might get lucky in the AM but high prob. of clouds in the PM. The only guaranteed days are a few in winter when high pressure sits over us and the whole mountain top is clear all day. And those days are rare.

We used Denny's trick which was to look at the mountains early in the morning and if you can see the tops...go. It worked.

Thanks! I didn't know if there was an online webcam or if someone sends out a twitter message or something on clear days ... LOL... thanks!

I think your best bet would be to start off in the morning on a clear, cloudless day. Put it in your schedule early on in your trip and be prepared to go based on the weather.

Last time we were in Kauai, we went on a clear day and were able to see great views but there were a few clouds up in the mountains when we arrived and within a short period of time, it clouded over quickly.

It totally depends on the weather. Totally clear days are rare, but even when there are clouds, some days it clears up occasionally, others it stays socked it. Best bets are before 10am and sometimes in the late afternoon, when it's cooling off, say 5pm. So yes, it you have a flexible schedule, try to notice which days are clearer when you get up in the morning and then go.

If you can't choose the day, we always recommend on this board to drive first thing all the way up, even you do see clouds. The earlier you get there, the better chance you have. And the valley creates its own weather, so sometimes it can have clearings in clouds when the museum area (at the meadow) is overcast.

My other recommendation is to go to the second lookout and as long as it's not pouring down rain, go for a short hike on the Pihea trail along the rim. You get a nice walk, and you are right along the edge in case it does clear up. If you have trouble on this trail (it is somewhat steep right at the beginning), just wait for 30-40 minutes at the lookout (bring a light jacket)--you might get a clearing in the clouds too.
