I'm finished planning, and now I don't know what to do?!

Honestly. I'm a planner. It's not that don't enjoy some spontaneity, but the "planning" is at least 50% of the fun for me!!

( I enjoy spontaneity on the days that I keep "open" to be "spontaneous"! ;-)

But really, I have budgeted the trip, made the necessary reservations, read everything I think there is to read, looked at every picture . . . . But I still have over 80 days until our trip, we're getting about 6" of snow this weekend, and I just don't know what to do?!?!?!?

Sigh . . . . (I know, these are the kind of problems we want to have in life . . . But still, I sigh.)

Aloha from Kaua'i!

Do what I do (only for my Paris addiction) - haunt the TA boards every day!

For real though, it helps! At least you know what is going on and it brings the place "closer" to you somehow as well.

Other than that - read as many books as you can about the place (fiction and non) - watch movies set there, and if you have visited before - pour through your photos of your last visit!

All things that help - but really - getting off the plane is when it will really "help" in a big way!

Good luck!

yes, mom...you've got quite a predicament there...lol.

have you read james michener's novel "hawaii"? (or watched the movie)

sit by the fire and listen to IZ? (must be done while sipping a mai tai)

lurk/participate in the hawaii forums? (other than this)

do some research about other hawaiian islands? (not just tourism...how about some history?)

endure the agony...it's well worth it!

This is so me. I have several trips planned and mostly booked all they way through September of 2013! I love trip planning, it's great stress relief for me and keeps me going at work through difficult times. I also pass the time by haunting the TA boards and finding novels set in the places I'm going to. Have you read The Descendents?

I used to tlike to put on Hawaii travel videos, rub on some plumeria scented lotion and paint my toenails hot pink. Go figure.

All great ideas, but I can't imagine all the planning is done...we've made 6 trips and still find new stuff to do, see or eat....right up till when we leave and once, got another idea from a fellow passenger! Keep looking!

Aloha from Kaua'i!

I'll give you a few titles of Kaua'i based books from my bookshelves - just as a helpful hint!

Non-fiction:

Kaua'i, The Separate Kingdom - Joesting

Hanalei, A Kaua'i River Town - Daniel Harrington

Ha'ena, Through the Eyes of the Ancestors - Carlos Andrade

The Story of Koloa, A Kaua'i Plantation Town - Donald Donohugh

Fiction or biography:

West of Then - Tara Bray Smith

Aloha, Kaua'i, a childhood - Waimea Williams

Waking up in Eden - Lucinda Fleeson

There are tons of Hawai'i based books, but the ones I've mentioned are specifically about Kaua'i (primarily) - I'm sure I've left many out, but these were the ones that jumped out at me from one of my bookshelves!

Right now I'm reading "Hoby" by Hoby Goodale - which is a wonderful Kaua'i book by a gentleman from old kama'aina families - but is only available right now at the Kaua'i Museum (or by ordering from them).....

Ditto 3chi's comment. Is the planning really done? Between now and then you're going to come across things that you hadn't thought of before. You'll probably make a number of adjustments to the planned itinerary. Leave yourself open to that. Don't consider it a done deal and file it all away.

That's the inherent problem with itineraries It can become a 'done deal' and somewhat cast in concrete. Keep reading up and you will find more and more options to consider and you most likely will edit your plans.

More books set in Kauai or at least partly:

Freefall - Kristen Heitzman

The Descendants - Kaui Hart Hemmings

Glass Beach - Jill Marie Landis

Need a good laugh and read set in Hawaii?

A Little Too Much Is Enough - Kathleen Tyau

Makai - Kathleen Tyau

Wild Meat and the Bully Burgers - Lois-Amm Yamanaka

After the Ball - David P Penhallow - I just started this and can't stop laughing!

I know for me - the closer the trip gets, the more I am on the forums and looking at webcams every day!

I love seeing the book titles - a few I haven't read, so it will be great - always a pleasure to read about Hawaii. :)
