East Shore - best hike?

Aloha from upstate New York!

I am researching east shore hikes for our trip in July. Wondering what everyone's thoughts are regarding Kuilau Ridge Trail vs. eastern hike up the Nounou Mt. Trail? Is one better than the other for views, etc. Any other advice on these two trails, or is there a better trail than these on the east side?

Mahalo,

I think Nounou is much better for views. Kuilau is easier, but the distance to the ocean means the view isn't as spectacular unless you prefer to look at the mountain.

We plan to do Nounou when we go in a few weeks. Our friends house backs to the trail....so we will start from there.

I think that y0u are refering to sleeping giant,

As posted there is quite a bit of difference, and you might want to do both of them. Sleeping giant is going to requrie more difficulty and energy, and the views from the top are going to be amazing.

Kuilau Ridge Trail, is going to be easier and shorter, with mostly lush valley and mountain views.

Dont know why that you have to chose one or the other, but if you are here for a week or two, you could do both, and enjoy both. Personally, we like the kuamo'o -nounou trail the best of the three trails up sleeping giant.

Happy treking

Mahalo Denny - we will look at all 3 and see if we can do more than one in the time we have!

If you're really ambitious you can do the Sleeping Giant in the morning and the Kuilau Ridge Trail in the afternoon.

Agree that both can be done in one day -- especially if you just do the Kuilau Ridge Hike the one mile up to the picnic shelter, and back down, which should only take you about an hour or more if you stay to enjoy the vista. Then hit the back side or the Kuamoo side trail head on the way back down the hill and spend a little more time on that one, maybe going all the way to the arch past the picnic shelter. If you still have energy after that, you can burn it off on the multi-use coastal path at Lydgate or Kapaa or another easy east side hike is Hoopii Falls off Kapahi Road.
