Lawai Kai

Ok - all you locals and long time visitors, here's your chance to be gentle with a fellow long time visitor asking an ignorant question...

In today's Garden Island News, there was reference to Lawaii Kai being designated a puuhonua and a protected subzone.

But where exactly is Lawaii Kai.

I immediately thought of the cove in front of the Prince Kuhio (?) monument but since they further described the newly-protected area as being "the beach between Lawaii Bay and Allerton Garden" but where exactly is Lawaii Bay? Does it include that cove? Does it start by the Beach House beach?

Just curious.

Lawai Bay - Kauai

This beach backs up to the Allerton Garden, or sometimes called the National Botanical Garden and is a breathtaking view of the south. Sunsets are great here. Access is tricky as you have to cross private property in order to access the beach. You can also kayak from the Kukui'ula Harbor which is only about a mile east.

The Lawai area was originally used to cultivate taro and rice. Queen Emma started the gardens here in 1871 with many starts brought into the bay on ships. After the Queen's death in 1886 Elizabeth McBryde bought the entire property for $50,000. She planted sugar cane in the upper lands and leased the lower lands to Chinese farmers to grow taro and rice. In 1935 the property was sold to Robert Allerton and he began to expand the gardens.

Yep, you really can't access it by foot without crossing private property which means you won't get to it that way. If you take a tour of the gardens you can see it from there. The only other way is some of the small zodiac type snorkeling tour operators on the south shore stop there for awhile for snorkeling or diving and you can swim up to the beach that way.

If you take the SUNSET ALLERTON ESTATE TOUR offered by the National tropical Botanical Gardens, you will be able to walk to the Lawai Kai beach located just beyond the Allerton house. Its really a special place and an interesting tour.

We've been to the end of that road and have seen the gate. We've wondered where all the folks were that had trucks parked there - obviously surfers.

We don't go onto private property but obviously others do.

Is there any way around the private land except by kayak?

<<We don't go onto private property but obviously others do.>> How would you know whether or not they have permission? Locals go down there to fish and dive fish. They know exactly where they are and where to go for what they need. They respect.
