I was calling my credit card companies to let them know that I would be traveling to Kauai this week with my credit and debit cards. I do this every time I travel because my cards have been shut down before due to fraud alert. The "fraud alert" is that I'm actually spending a ton of money on my vacation causing unusual activity. I understand this premise. Today, however, I was totally shocked when the Visa rep told me that I may be charged an additional 3% "international" transaction fee for travel overseas. I assured the rep that Kauai truly WAS in the United States and that I have an American Visa card. She sounded flustered at this point, and told me that I still may be charged an extra 3% fee since I was traveling "overseas."
I'm pretty sure that this Visa rep was just geographically challenged, but has anyone ever heard of being charged "international" fees for traveling from the US mainland to the US State of Hawaii?
