North or South in August? Also accommodations?

We are going in August and I know we will go different places on the island than just where we stay, but we would like to be near a "swimmable" beach. I read the North Shore is calmer in August, but I don't know if that means I should head there or if South is still a safer bet?

Also, really don't want a hotel b/c I want a family vacation feel. I was looking for a home to rent because I have watched too many episodes of Hawaii Life on HGTV but I am not having much luck finding homes - so many condos come up in searches. There are only 4 of us (Myself, husband and 2 teenage boys), so a condo would work, but I really want a Hawaiian feel and condos don't seem very serene and retreat like. Any suggestions?

Budget of about $3000-$4000 for a week for accommodations.

Please help - the more I read the more overwhelmed and further away from a decision I get.

The North Shore is a terrific place to be in the summer. It is also prime time on the north end of the island. Poipu beaches are also terrific and though the waves are higher than the winter, there are still safe beaches to enjoy.

Check VRBO for house listings in Hanalei or Haena if you want an HGTV feel to your vacation. Bali Hai Realty is another source of homes.

This house has some availability in August. Haven't stayed there but we did stay in the cottage on the same property a few years ago and had a chance to tour the house. It's in a great location - the beach right across the street isn't swimmable, but you're only about 5 minute from Tunnels in one direction and 10 minutes or so back to Hanalei in the other:

This house in Hanalei has some availability in August. The location is great, and it's less than a five minute walk to Hanalei Bay. I love the fully screened- in lanai! http://www.vrbo.com/112260

The water on the south shore isn't always rough in the summer. It's a day by day thing, no different than what we advise about the north shore in the winter. Even if the waves have kicked up in Poipu it's usually still swimmable. Snorkeling may not be the best but still swimmable. If snorkeling is important then definitely head north.

Either location is great in the summer although Poipu will be hotter in August.

To Desertbeach Lover - re: http://www.vrbo.com/89728

Thank you for the info about the beach. This is what concerns me - If I just came across this listing on my own, I would never know you couldn't swim right there. The listing talks about the lovely beach and has photos. What makes it unswimmable? Are there rocks there I can't see or is it the current? House still looks lovely!

Aloha from Kaua'i!

I know everyone here is steering you to the North Shore, and of course in August, you will have fine conditions on either side, so up to you....but in terms of swimming? I do an ocean swim class here in the Po'ipu area every week.....we started up last summer and there hasn't been one day that we have had to cancel (summer or winter) due to bad conditions.....the water is lovely here usually year round.

Of course anywhere you are on island, check daily ocean conditions before you go into the ocean.

Tons of accomodations here for vacation rentals, condos, etc. here as well. All you have to do is google it! All price ranges as well.

The North Shore is beautiful, but it isn't the only place on the island that is!

Just checking Parrish"s website and they have quite a few homes and cottages available in August. You can search their website easily by plugging in your dates and price range.

Hi - Thanks I just talked with Parrish and they are completely booked on the North side and have one small home in Poipu Beach area - (www.parrishkauai.com/kauai-cottages/poipu/) Their calendars on their website are apparently not current.

When I talked with Bali Hai they said definitely stay in north and Parrish said the opposite - so you can see how I get confused.

Bali Hai had one home they suggested:

balihai.com/KauaiVacationRentals/Ka-Makana_3…

I really appreciate all the feedback on this forum. It is really hard to figure out when you have never been some place.

Catherine, the home suggested by Bali Hai is the same home I suggested in Post 4. I've been in the home many times--very nice and a great location.
