Rental car fees: < 25 years of age

Has anyone had any experience renting vehicles in Kauai when the primary driver is < 25 years of age? My husband and I are both 24, and we've been able to rent vehicles in other locations in the past where we could avoid the extra fees associated with "underage" drivers. Do the rental car agencies in Kauai hammer you with that sort of fee? Would you happen to know which agencies let it slide? Thanks!

I've read that Dollar will rent to under 25 drivers, at an extra cost (not sure what that is though). One thing about Dollar though....make sure you have either (a) a CREDIT card with sufficient available credit on it....or (b) a DEBIT card and a good credit profile. If you present a debit card upon check-in, they will run a credit inquiry....and if you're not "approved" because of less-than-perfect credit, you can be denied the rental on the spot. I don't think you can avoid the surcharge when you're under 25 though.

Hi Katemax,

If you go through www.hawaiidrive-o.com you can get a special deal through Thrifty where they will WAIVE the usual $15 per day "young driver fee." It works out to be a very good value for those who are 21-24.

Thrifty doesn't keep their cars right on the Airport lot, like most of the major rental car companies, but they do have a counter right across from Baggage Claim. So you just go over there and give them your name and they'll call for Thrifty's Courtesy Shuttle to come pick you up and take you to the Main Office where they do keep their cars. It's about a mile away from the airport. Either watch the signs or leave breadcrumbs, so you can find your way back there to return your car. at the end of your trip.

If you are new to renting cars, you might want to make sure that you are covered insurance-wise before you go over. Usually your own car insurance will also cover any car you rent. Your credit card will also often have an insurance policy attached to it for rental cars. If you find out all this before your trip, you can turn down the costly insurance they offer you at the counter. However if you are not covered, it might be a good idea to purchase coverage for your rental car. Information is usually available on the web before you go, but they can talk you through it at the counter as well.

Definitely give hawaiidrive-o a try. It could save you a bundle that you could put toward tropical drinks or shave ice!
