Hiking/biking reccomendations

Active family of 3, we have a 10 year old boy. Staying in Princeville early June. Been to Big Isalnd and Maui, but this will be 1st trip to Kauai. We want to hike, bike, and kayak on a river. I've read blue book, but want recomendations on:

1. hiking? We can handle a 4 hour round trip hike (we scheduled 2 days for hiking excursions and was thinking Waimea Canyon hike for one day and North Shore hike on another day, but am open to suggestions.

2. biking? read about Spalding Monument loop and that seems ok. We can't handle hard core mt bike, but 4 hour excursion on decent unpaved surface is fine. I also know about the paved bike path on Coconut Coast, but want something a little more rustic than that.

3. kayaking. Since we are on North Shore, I've looked at Hanalei river to go on our own 1-2- hour excursion. But do you suggest other rivers?

Thanks

1. It took us about 4 hours + a snack break at the falls to do Hanakapiai falls. You could try that and turn around at the beach if the falls are too much. I've got the Okolehau Trail in Hanalei. The guide says 2.5 miles each way.

3. I rented a standup paddleboard on the Hanalei River and went upstream a bit. It was really pretty.

The Waikoa Loop Trail would be fun and is close to Princeville. Take a look at this site for other suggestions

North shore.......KAYAK HANALEI , 808-826-1881. For the Hanalei River and Bay on your own. They are located as you enter Hanalei on the makai side of the road, just as you pass the Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant.

East Shore....KAYAK KAUAI, 808- 826- 9844 for the Wailua River. Combo kayak and hike to Secret Falls.

Put is on the South Side of the Wailua, next to Smiths Barges. No having to transport the kayak on the top of the car.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

North Shore family style hike: WAI KOA about 5 mile loop rated easy. Newly opened by owner on private land. Onwer has installed trail signs, and information signs along the trail. lots of lush green, huge groves of trees, and most special the beautiful stone dam area with a water fall spill way, beautiful grounds, bubbling river. Not many know about this trail, it is not crowded with 500 plus tourists, nor requires constant rescues like the Hanakapiai Trail ( first two miles of the Kalalau ) and very pleasant.

No stream crossings, no boudlers or rock strewn sections of the trail. On the main hwy in Kikauea, mauka side, next to the new minuture golf course, and banana joes. Slow down for the entry off the main highway, speed bump, and proceed straight ahead, to a new non car filled parking area next to the trail head.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Biking: Riding along the new paved coastal path from Kapa'a on up past Donkey Beach is an excellent idea, and probably the safest for bikers and away from vehicle traffic and our narrow road ways. We have not biked up to the monument, which is on the mauka side of the hwy....so not familar with that particular section. But, we do not see very many cars driving up there. The OP, has done some good homework for thier family planning. Good on ya ! Most of our roads are narrow, no real bike paths, narrow or no shoulders, so finding biking away from the traffic dangers is mighty smart.

My edit time ran out, so want to add.

HIKING WIAMEA CANYON or KOKE'E trails. The OP has a long way to drive from the norh shore. It is our practice here in LIHUE to look up at the mountains for dark rain clouds, or obscuration of the ridge by low level clouds. If that is the situation , we go to plan B.

Also, we call the friendly gals up at the Koke'e mueseum for the latest trail conditions for the trail or trails that we want to hike. 808-335-9975 (0pen 10 am to 4 pm).

We will check with the Koke'e museum the afternoon the day before we head up there for the trail conditions since we leave Lihue about 8 am or so, to drive up the mountain.......we have found that generally early is best so we want to be up at the trail head early and get in the hike before the usual clouds roll in.

We continually see lines of cars headed up the mountain as we are coming down, and it is raining, and there are low clouds and fog. They will arrive to no views and lots of wet. Just FYI for the OP .

Thanks kalapakidooley.

Any advice on particular trails at Wiamea canyon or koke'e? We've hiked down in the Grand Canyon, so I think we'd prefer to go for views looking down, out, and across. Will definitely call the day before to check on trail conditions, great tip!

Aloha from Kaua'i!

Also, up in Hanalei town, at Ching Young Village, is Pedal n Paddle, and they've been around about 30 years now. They rent bikes, kayaks, snorkel gear, camping gear and sell also. http://www.pedalnpaddle.com/main-frame.html

As an alternative spot for biking.....a flat and scenic (and sunny!) area to bike is out from Waimea town past Kekaha and to PMRF.....this area on the weekends especially is very little traffic (even during the week it is, except for commute hours).....has a large shoulder for running or biking and you have a large section that goes right along the ocean as well with views of the island of Ni'ihau. You have mile markers to gauge how far you are going, and if it is rainy elsewhere, the chances are good it will be sunny out there!

Janet
